I used to get down that way when I was still working the gun shows, but like everything, they have become so dramatic and crowded that I just don't go any more. I made a lot of money at those shows, especially the Crossroads Shows of the West, however, expenses ate up most of the profit, motels, food, gas, table rent, etc ad nasium, so I just quit going.

My oldest son recently retired from the Army as a Major. He is now in Afghanistan teaching the Afghan soldiers what he taught the American Soldiers here. He was involved in Ordinance Disposal, getting rid of explosives that were left by others to inflict harm and damage. I talk to him weekly and he defiantly loves his job, and thank you for those thoughts, I will gladly pass that along to him when I talk to him this week.

And I LOVE grilled chicken, drats.

Skip you have had an interesting life. Thank you for your service. I have to agree that the only people I want carrying guns are those that know how to handle them safely and have the mental capacity to know what that means. I also agree that allowing just anyone to carry a gun of any kind without training and permits is just asking for trouble. I have a predator problem too; called people's dogs. I keep a .22 rifle behind the door and shoot to kill. Some people are appalled that I'd kill someone's 'pet' that they 'love so much'. My response is that if they loved it so much they'd keep it home in their yard. When it jumps a 6 foot electrified fence to kill chickens then it deserves to be dead. Sorry, I'm just tired of that sort of nonesense. I will say that since I shot the last two that lived down the street I see more dogs down there tied up in their yards, where they were never tied or kept home before so maybe the word is getting around

Interesting? You think my life has been "interesting?" I haven't even begun to talk about myself, but thank you.

As for shooting neighbors dogs, GO FOR IT. You have the legal right in Arizona to defend your stock, take all the advantages you can.

I have told all my neighbors, including my sister and her roommate next door that I WILL shoot to kill any animal I find on my property, IF THE GATE is closed. They all have said they understand, but luckily so far I haven't had to do that.

Got the lights under the tomatoes turned on, tomatoes covered, Pool pump on, outside hose on a tad.
Got down to 23 this morning and I lost 2 of my 3 pepper plants. Makes me sad....they were even covered but it was just too cold.

Got 10 eggs today. My Marans laid TWO in a row. One was seimi soft shelled the other hard.. She hadn't laid for a few days... but I know she laid BOTH of them... she's the only one that lays that dark.

I was counting my little Icelandics. Looks like I have 6 total. 2 are pure white, but I imagine they'll bring on some other colored feathers as they mature. I'm hoping they are not all roos!

Time to go cover the geraniums in the front yard. They look like they may make it.

I'm getting tired of doing this EVERY NIGHT.

It took me four hours to cover/move everything the other night. I've just left the covers in place for the duration. Two more nights to go for most stuff - three for the most sensitive plants. Hope they make it.

Expect more of the same in the future. It is climate change aka global warming and it is predicted to bring us more extremes of temperature here in the SW--hotter summers, colder winters. It sure creates a lot more work. Insulating pipes, running extension cords, higher electric bills to come...we picked the oranges off of two trees rather than have them ruined. Those oranges are ripe, but my tangerines are not---tree is loaded with fruit this year. I left them to the elements. Hope they will still be good. I already had about 400' of outdoor extension cords strung in two different directions for different protections---nothing left for the tangerine

The grapefruits aren't fit to eat until April-May. If they freeze and get pithy, I won't be too upset, but I like those tangerines.

If you use something like Agribon, the spun bonded polyester row cover you could leave it on most of the winter. I buy mine from Peaceful Valley in CA. This is the heaviest weight which is a little stiff. There is a lighter weight but doesn't protect from freezing to as low a temp http://www.groworganic.com/agribon-ag-50-83-x-50.html

Most everything in my yard survived the much colder weather we had a couple of years ago. That was only a couple of nights, though. Those plants are much bigger now and the covers don't fit as well so they may or may not make it through this event. The good thing about this weather is my quince tree should be getting enough chill hours to make it happy. Maybe we'll get fruit this year

The chickens will be happier when it warms up - not because they're cold, but because all their favorite green things have been transformed into giant white cloth lumps. They are bored with no greens to steal through the fencing.

I have not done anything for most of my citrus (grapefruit, lemon, tangelo) because of their size, but I did cover the lime. I'll have to check the grapefruits tomorrow and see how they fared. I'm afraid the lemon may have suffered the most so far. It only recently recovered from that hard freeze of a couple years ago when it got down to 17 for so many hours here. Thankfully, we're not forecast to get that low here, but darn close. I'm most worried about my Black Mission fig. It froze down to about a foot of stump in that bad freeze. We sure will be racking up the chill hours with this system.

Oh, I wanted to tell everyone about the most incredible thing that happened last night. Right before midnight we got a telephone call that woke us from a sound sleep. It was someone calling to tell us that they found Rocket! They had just seen him crossing Speedway Blvd, saw his reflective collar and knew that he was out of place and needed help. They stopped and called to him and being the awesome cat he is, he went right up to them. They found our contact information on his tag. We can't believe he survived those six days of wandering. Where he was found he would have had to have crossed six lanes of Broadway, four lanes of Alvernon, six lanes of Speedway and all of the smaller roads in the two miles that he had travelled. We suspect he was chased far by the coyote and got lost. We've all been so terribly sad since he went missing and then lost the chickens; we were so overjoyed at his return that we couldn't hardly sleep. I also keep thinking about that kind young couple that went out of their way to help and refused anything in return. Such good and decent people.
