Arizona Chickens

Mary has a good suggestion with the hoop coop. They require few materials and can be achieved without great carpentry skills. Also check out posts by SherrieT and MagicChicken; they've recently built similar hoop coops. Last year I made a chicken enclosure (can't really call it a coop) for a friend of mine using stuff lying around my yard and hers. We used an old dog run for the main structure and I had two 4' X 8' trellises made from 2 x 4s and covered with welded wire that we used for the roof on the other section. We covered the sides with welded wire I had left over from my coop. The roost is under an old awning from her house and an old chest of drawers serves as her nesting box. I don't think a dime was spent on this pen. My friend is ecstatic with it; she loves the fact that she can stand up inside it. It's a bit more open that I would prefer, but she's raised chickens all her life here in AZ with a similar arrangement.

This is exactly what I think my sister needs to build. She's moving at the end of the month to a bigger place and wants a larger coop/run.

Dang, I wanna go hiking with Gallo!!!

Yes us too!!
Valley fever was cured by a vet.. He suggested to use sulfur Usp
We got it after trying 3 different antibiotic's/ anti fungal medicine.. My DH was so sick for about 1 1/2 years.
Confirmed valley fever.. Blood work & X-ray.. Seriously worked by the 3-4 day.. He did stink like sulfur..
We got it at the bashas pharmacy $6.68 plus tax.. Oh wait the pharmisudical company's might go out
of bussiness if the word got out...
We still have some if anyone would like to have it.. You can also get the info from homecure.com
With all of the contaminants in the ground H20, air, food it is hard to keep up with the latest & greatest
& what works best for your own situation..
I will post up some more great info in a minute... Another cheep way to take care of yourself..

Maybe we could organize a chicken enclosure building day to help her out. I liked that pen design because we used two sides of the brick wall. That saved on materials.

We're really lucky here to have so many trails within minutes of the center of town. We worked west to east, hitting all the trails in the front range of the Catalinas. We'd done Pontatoc Canyon trail earlier the week before (4+ miles, 1000'+ elevation gain). Oh, and I forgot Soldier trail from last week (5+ miles, 2000'+). I found this cool video of Soldier trail that a local guy made using GPS and Google Earth. He's made a bunch and they're cool and inspiring:

I think she would really like that!
She has a small coop that she is planning to move but wants to have a grow out coop(probably her current coop) and a larger coop and then have a combination yard that she can section off when growing out chicks. She does have a block wall and I think she is planning on using at least one wall, maybe two. She is moving out to the East desert, though so it definitely needs to be predator proof. Of course, she already has a major coyote problem where she lives at 5th and Rosemont so this won't be much different. I told her to watch for dog runs on Craigslist.
