Arizona Chickens

I need some thoughts.

I gave some of my fermented feed to a person I know, he was not in the office so I gave the Gallon jug. to his wife. I told her it needs to breath and be feed or the starter could die. Apparently he was not happy with the results. His girls almost stop laying, they acted wonky, and the eggs they gave tasted bad. Now my sister told me I had to stop giving it to my girls, that is why they have not started laying. I told her what I told his wife, I wonder if the fermentation died. If that was so it may not be good to give it to chickens. My girls haven't started laying because they have been molting baby feathers and they are only 20 & 21 weeks old. Chickens will start laying at 16 weeks to 29 weeks by breed. The early layers are production birds, I do not have any of that breeds. Most will lay between 20 and 29 weeks. I'm not worried. Also the one that is laying, her eggs are outstanding.

Could it be the F Feed had died?

We need a BYC hiking club!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE all the coop pics and designs.

Yesterday, I got 11 eggs. I have 11 hens, but one is an internal layer. So it seems she popped out an egg. She's still very distended in her abdomen, but maybe it's correcting??

Here's a pic of my husband and my brood hiking in the desert...

Hi everyone! Skimming through this thread I saw a lot of you are giving away roosters and have babies and pullets for sale. Ive got 11 girls, 6 blonde ones and 5 red ones. I just finished fencing off a part of my yard so they can get out when I'm out there with them, to many predators to let them out alone. Anyways I wanted to add some color to my flock. Some fun looking chickens. I'm not worried about pure breeds or anything. If anyone close to the mesa area has some chickies they are rehoming or selling please let me know! They will be a part of our family and not used as meat birds. I could NEVER be able to kill one of my pets for food. It would be like eating my dog or something! :O Reply here or PM me if you have any chickadee or roosters available!

OK I am STILL looking for SOP Buff Orpingtons. Doesn't anyone breed them in this state? I have a couple of hatchery girls that aren't _too_ bad, but would really like to find some really nice ones.
I honestly can't think of anyone with SQ buff orps. Orps, yes, but not buff. Might ask DeWitt (DeWitt Stables)...his grandkids are always going through different breeds. Best orps would be James Smith in Central, but to my knowledge he only has blacks and whites.

Or check in Poultry Press for ads and order some from elsewhere. I'm not into orpingtons, so I really can't say which lines are the best.

Quote: Most of the feed stores carrry DE in 50lb bags for $25-30 last time I checked. After having tried it for a couple or so years, I am not a fan. One of the Arizona Thread gals did some actual experimentation with it on effectiveness. Very, very slow to have any impact.

Beware of modern "snake oil" riding the tails of the health food movement, is what I think. Stated in the website posted, "Diatomaceous Earth is a simple and inexpensive way to get the silica your body needs." OK last I knew we are a carbon-based life form, not a silicon-based one. Silicon is not an essential element to the human body. So this statement is sooooo misleading. Our bodies do not need silica (silicon dioxide). Now whether or not DE actually has any health benefits, I don't know, I personally have never tried it. Buyer beware! Just my opinion.

My PR, Cherry, must have heard all this talk of crowing hens and decided to join in. I caught her crowing this morning! Of course, she stopped when the video camera came out.

Actually, there's been several studies pointing to evidence that silica is necessary for the body for proper bone development, as well as more "beauty" related items like hair and fingernails. I came across it a few years ago when I was researching some about osteoporosis. The basis was that silicon is primarily ingested in the younger years through dietary intake. The most common method was for younger males by drinking beer. The article I was reading pointed to the philosophy that that is the reason you see far fewer bald or thin-haired men in countries like Ireland and Germany. I haven't been to either country, so I can't verify that, but it does make sense from the stereotypical standpoint. This was probably five years ago and I have no idea if that information is still accurate or if anything more has been done, though, so take it with a grain of salt...

Now, as to the other claims, I have no idea either way. I agree, though, there is a lot of snake oil out there. And being carbon-based life forms, we still require large amounts of iron, zinc, potassium, sodium, etc. It's hard to tell these days, but especially here in America, we appear to be severely malnourished overall.
