IF YOU LIVE IN CHANDLER OR KNOW SOMEONE WHO DOES THAT WANTS TO KEEP CHICKENS

Proposed Chandler Chicken Ordinance proposes a 5 chicken maximum regardless of lot size. Chandler residents, please share your opinions with planning and zoning by emailing David at [email protected]

FYI, the breed is "Marans."  With an "s."  Even when you're only talking about one of them.  Common error.  Time we all worked on fixing it :-)

Oh, good to know. But now my English is failing me. How would the possessive form be? Marans' eggs or Marans's eggs. Oy, and to think this is my first and only language...

I have a question on chicken behavior? Has any one ever seen or know of a chicken that sleeps and rests like this?

When I first posted the picture I thought little of it. I have seen her laying like this often. I showed it to a lady today who moving home so she can have chickens again. She said she never seen anything like that and wondered if anything was wrong with her leg. Powder usually lay to the right with the left leg out, but then she will lay to the left with her light leg out. :idunno She has been giving me 5 to 6 eggs a week now, seems healthy.

Hmm....My 0.02 if she's eating, pooping, laying and otherwise seems normal she's probably ok (?)

Ours will sometimes lounge for a bit in a position like that with one leg or the other stretched out. I've also had one of our OEGBs sit on her belly with both of her legs stretched out behind her and look up at us like she was hoping for attention (now that was really bizarre). One thing I can say about our chickens is that they do weird things, often for seemingly no particular reason....

I just fired off an EMail to him. I may not live in Chandler, but he doesn't need to know that. I think it's important to protect these freedoms. I just pray Peoria doesn't try to take similar action. And speaking of... I need to talk to my neighbors about my Roo, now that he's crowing. I know I'm overly sensitive to the crowing, but I want to be a good neighbor. I've know some of them for fifteen years.

My new coop's farm is almost finished. It is smaller then I originally planned. I have desided that I am just going to buy an other kennels like I have and combine them into one. It will be cheaper. I will make another section with a gate to add to my 8' section to mane a divider in my enlarged pen. If or when I add chickens/chicks I can separate them and let them safely get to know each other. I am so excited that I have been able to get this much done. I am out of wood, next week I can get more. Right now I can stain and seal what I have finished.

Last night one bird roosted on his own. Tonight three birds roosted on their own. Only had to move 19 chickens tonight. Maybe in a couple more days they'll all be roosting on their own. You'd think they'd want to do it themselves so they could pick who they roost next to. When I move them, I just put them into a randomly available space. Probably next to their worst nightmare - the chicken yard bully!

The dark browns are probably Marans. The chocolate brown is usually trademarked by the Black Copper Maran, though others may claim them, too. BostonBryce and DesertMarcy are the only ones in the state that I could find breeding BCMs.

The medium dark brown, like the second from the bottom in the middle, is most likely a Maran. That is the same color as my Birchen Maran's eggs. They are a beautiful speckled brown.

I know several sites were selling "Olive Eggers," but the never mentioned what the breeds were crossed with. I have yet to find a good site for that information. CvoNick mentioned the BCM too over New Hampshire's to make Rhode Islands, I think. But I haven't delved in to that part of chickens, yet.
The most common and 'classic' cross for an olive egger is between a Marans x Ameraucana (or blue egg laying Easter Egger but less likely). Here is a chart that helps illustrate what is behind the true olive egg and the common lighter green egg.

Demosthine, If you bred that New Hampshire Cockerel to one of your Barred Rock hens you would create Sex Links....that is one of the many crosses hatcheries use.

Mine lay like that when they are sunning or taking a break dust bathing. I think it just means that they are comfortable enough to lay down!
