Arizona Chickens

:ep HOME INVASION !! I was cleaning and left the door open again. Powder decided it was a good place to take a nap. She likes laying sort of on her side with one leg out. They know I do not let them in, but every chance they get they come inside. :bow I guest I will have to keep cleaning supply's at the door if I can't remember to close the screen door.

Awhee, love you daily chicken encounters.. & photos..

Almost done with week one here in Rio Rico. 6 sexlinks and the kids already have quirky names for them. All is well so far.*knock* on wood. Anybody else down here in So. AZ.?

I have only heard that 3 is the magic number.. As you have stated.. We will be hatching next week.. If she does not settle in bring her on
over we will include her in with the other girls..
I did put some fertile eggs on the front patio for you.. I will possibly be home by 4:30 ish?? Just call me.. If not hope that you do find eggs
for your broody hen...

The wife decided she wants babies again so she went back to Pet Club and got a BR chick that is the same age as the RIR. She says they are happy, cuddly, and most importantly quiet! LOL
Thank you so much for the offer. It would have been fun to have the hen hatch some babies. Maybe next time.

Notinoz: I'm so happy that your Olive Egger started laying, and is laying olive! Mine started laying about a week ago, and so far has laid almost every day since :)

Tansy free ranges. Not seen a lot of wild birds in coop. Tansy was not yet a full year. She had gotten broody once after a clutch of eggs. She was laying again. I was waiting for her to get broody so she would set some americanus for me. Oh well, that's not going to happen now.
Some how your comment that lice attack sick birds makes sense to me because when the body is worn down (the immune system specifically) the opportunistic mites, microbes and other parasites do invade because the weakened are easier to attack.

every day is Easter when you have chickens. I need to get new pictures of my wonderful LEGBARS I forget how old they are now but it must be close to four months. They have such calm and yet curious personality.

Ok! Now wait a minute? What hen lays olive green? Where can I get that hen & chocolate color egg layer? Possibly by next week?? Babies would be the best since ours are hatching next week.

The dark browns are probably Marans. The chocolate brown is usually trademarked by the Black Copper Maran, though others may claim them, too. BostonBryce and DesertMarcy are the only ones in the state that I could find breeding BCMs.

The medium dark brown, like the second from the bottom in the middle, is most likely a Maran. That is the same color as my Birchen Maran's eggs. They are a beautiful speckled brown.

I know several sites were selling "Olive Eggers," but the never mentioned what the breeds were crossed with. I have yet to find a good site for that information. CvoNick mentioned the BCM too over New Hampshire's to make Rhode Islands, I think. But I haven't delved in to that part of chickens, yet.

FYI, the breed is "Marans." With an "s." Even when you're only talking about one of them. Common error. Time we all worked on fixing it :-)

I will probably have BCM hatching this fall; my girls should be laying come June and I will probably set some to hatch around Sep/Oct so they will start to lay next spring. I do have some eggs in the 'bator for olive eggers. A pretty easter egger boy over 1) a very old Welsummer hen laying a medium brown egg. 2) a very old Welsummer/Brown Leghorn cross hen that lays a ginormous medium brown egg with freckles 3) a Welsummer pullet that lays a darker brown egg with really dark speckles. All the girls from this cross should lay some shade of olive, the pullet's daughters will probably be the darkest. I have some hatching this weekend for me. I have more hatching every weekend after that which will all be for sale. In the mix also are three easter egger girls which lay a very light true blue, a greenish egg and one that lays a light olive/sage/grey-green color (very hard to describe and harder to photograph!)
