Arizona Chickens

??? All that link produces here is a 3.5 cu ft Contractor Duty cement mixer and a "shingle hog portable shingle remover." No cattle panels in the search results here. I've never seen a true cattle panel at a Home Depot in Tucson. Maybe northern Arizona stores do carry them. Feed stores carry them here, for $39 and up.

Home Depot does carry remesh panels for $20-$25. They're about 4' x 8' with 6 or 8" openings, but the remesh panels are nowhere near as strong as a true cattle panel. I use them for garden trellises and I hoop them for row cover supports. If I were going to use remesh for a hoop coop, though, I'd buy the 150' rolls. It would be a lot cheaper.
Maybe it doesn't bring it up for you because it reads your location and your home depot doesn't have them??? I just clicked on the link and right next to the portable shingle thing, it lists the cattle panels for $25. If you put in a zipcode for Prescott area (change store location), I think it will bring it up for you as the browser will have your location saved for the Prescott Home Depot. Pick the Prescott store and then do a search for cattle panel if all else fails.

My panels are 4' tall and 16' long, 4 gauge, with the squares on the panel 6"x8". When I arch it, I can easily walk under them. They are pretty heavy duty and difficult to manage with one person. For those of you looking for these, it might be cost effective to drive to get them if they are $40 where you live. Just make sure they have some in stock.

We are east of Apache Junction, up against the Superstition Mountains. Just joined today.

No chickens yet; but had quite a few when we lived in Chandler….

Billam I just PM you...
Too bad I missed it before I left work and headed to Pet Club.

They have four-day old RIR and BR chicks. I picked up a RIR since we lost one in our last batch. We put her in with the broody hen and everything seemed fine...until about an hour later we could hear the chick chirping away. I went out and she was out in the run with the other hens. Only one seemed curious about her. I picked her up and tired putting her back in with the broody hen and the hen just tried to peck her away. Now the chick is in our living room in our brooder box crying to be cuddled. Anyone ever tried raising a chick all by itself. I really don't have room for two more chickens so I don't want to go get another one. If it's not a good idea to raise her solo...anyone want a four-day old RIR?

My next post of chick photos - these were taken a week ago and I almost forgot to keep posting a few a day!
They are at the scruffy age...

Also, those eggs are coming in from my older girls!! Yay!!

Where can I get cattle panels to make a hoop coop? I'm in Casa Grande, we have a Pet Club, would they carry it? Or do I need to make a road trip?

There's a guy in Stanfield who has a running ad on Craigslist, and the cheapest prices around.  $33 for a cattle panel.  (Cheapest I've found in Tucson is $39.)   Stanfield is too far for me to drive for them but it's not that far from Casa Grande:

I only have a 6' bed my pick up. I would need a trailer. We could go in as a group, if someone had a trailer long enough. I have a1/2 ton, can pull more then I can carry. In late May or early June, can't go until then. With the price of gas I would have to have a full load to make it worth while. (What ever a full load is). Would need to do some math to see if there is a savings and how many would need to get to save. But! First!

128-138 miles, one way I would most likely need 20 ga. of fuel depending on the weight I am pulling. OH, one other thing dose anyone have a trailer? That is a start. You have to be able to carry it home, more important then where it is, when first things first.
P.S. I am thinking of Phx metro area as a group.

I don't think my Home Depot has them either. I will have to drop by and check, but I don't remember seeing any there when I was looking for building supplies. I might just have to stick to my original plan for a coop and run. I saw many nice ways to modify the Purina Chicken coop ( http://poultry.purinamills.com/stellent/groups/public/documents/web_content/ecmp2-0160674.pdf ) I like the looks of the plan too. I was just thinking a hoop coop would be cheaper, easier to build, and provide more space.

When I bought my three cattle panels I put them over the top of my truck cab and shell, and tied them down in front and back. I wouldn't want to do many more than two or three at a time because those suckers are HEAVY and maneuvering them onto/off of the truck roof was not fun. There is no way I would drive more than a few miles with that loading arrangement. A trailer would be more practical.
