Arizona Chickens

Yesterday was my birthday and I asked for a grow-out coop... I got it! Put the babies all out today and they loved it. It shares a wall with my big girls run so they can get to know each other. I still have some pretty young ones in the group and the nights are still too chilly so they will just go out during the day for now. I also got a grapevine which I planted today to grow up one of the sides of the run for summer shade.
Happy Birthday! That sounds like a great present. Sure is funny how much a chicken can change you and your life!

Here's to another great year!

* You could still squeeze in Radishes. 21 Days to Harvest. I'll plant til Mid April or so, in my garden. I put it on the East side of my house so I get shade during the afternoon. I run a Mister from now til ?¿. It keeps the ground temps cooler. And everything I seed, grows. Snap peas, Radishes, carrots, onions, lettuce, corn, bell pepper, etc. Tomatoes are a little trickier. Even though it's always 7-10 degrees hotter out here, during the summer, than anyy where in the Valley, my veggies do great.
If anything, start some stuff in the house and put outside, at night during the summer. I just started tomato, bell pepper, and a watermelon in my house. So far, so good. :) *

How did you get a upside down question mark???

You run your mister only durring the hottest part of the day?? What about after dark in the summer?

Yeah right tea from 4-5.. The neighbors did not leave till past 11:30 ish last night.. I am a walking zombie..
For all of you that missed our chicken talk.. It was great..
Ladykodydoria, wow on the greens fabulous! My friends & neighbors ask if they are from my garden?
In my dreams.. A garden that size will take a bigger lot..

Do you work for a public school? If so, your district probably has a resource office that could provide an incubator. Some districts will even loan resources to private or charter schools...

Make sure you have something to do with the chicks after they are hatched...not ethical IMO to hatch without a plan already in place for what will happen to them afterwards. There is a preschool/elementary school here that hatches eggs for me every year (for the last seven). Occasionally a child or staff member will ask to have one of the chicks--I deal with that on a case by case basis, but the up front understanding is that I get back all the chicks they hatch.
Yes I teach in TUSD-public school. Thanks for the ideas, I tried and could not find anything (doesn't mean it isn't there but need more time to look).

I talked with my parents and they all donated so that we could purchase an incubator and that way I can use it each year in my class..

I agree that there should be a plan for the chicks-nothing irritates me more than people that don't think things through. I will add the chicks to my flock

. I have had some kiddos declare that they want some of the chicks-I remind them that we are going to let them grow in the classroom and the school garden for a few weeks and then they will go home with me.

Well, AlohaChicken received her shipment of Speckled Sussex today and she brought them over.

Out of 25 Sussex, only 18 made the shipment alive. An extra one was having it really rough, and despite my wife's tender loving care, I had to cull it tonight, too. There just wasn't any way it would have made it to the morning. So 17 out of 25 made it.

Quick note - just to be fair to anyone considering ever ordering from Ideal - they did not have a full 25 Sussex to fill the order, so actually the losses on the Sussex was just the one chick. They have been in short supply this year! So they sent me only 18 Sussex chicks instead, as they did not have as many hatch as they'd hoped. (If they'd had 25 to order then I would have chosen all Sussex pullets.) So, I had to order a few extra "something else" to help pad the box, so I chose a few Partridge Rock males. The Partridge Rock makes did not survive. But since they were kind of an afterthought to fill up the box, not the end of the world.

I'm really happy that the Sussex chicks did so well. But I was honestly surprised about the Partridge Rocks. I thought that was also supposed to be a sturdy breed and males are generally tougher than females in my experience anyway? Oh well, I suppose if they weren't strong enough to weather the journey, probably not something I should add to the gene pool anyway.

The box of Barred Hollands was just shocking. So many expired chicks, I've never seen anything like it! I've ordered from Ideal before years ago and that shipment had 100% survive. (Mix of several breeds.)

I don't know why anyone would even bother, but I do feel bad for whomever ordered them and did not get their shipment.

For those who can have roos.

I have a beautiful Icelandic roo that I hoped I'd get some babies out of before he started crowing too badly.

Here's the deal, if you promise to keep the breed true, and keep them and breed them, I will GIVE you "JACK" along with two or three gorgeous Icelandic pullets that lay a medium white egg and almost as well as leghorns.

He just about brought down the house this morning at 5:30AM he was SO LOUD and I have no doubt that my neighbors had to have heard him.

PM me and let me know... otherwise, he'll be going to Pratt's as a "game roo".

Once again if anyone had any donations for my FFA poultry project it would be so greatly appreciated! Old coops,materials,birds,gravel,food,food/waterers, and basically anything that we could use. Thanks
