Arizona Chickens

Thanks SO much MaddBaggins. I love your coop! I'm still trying to work out the details on my layout, my husband and I keep going back and forth on it. I'll show him your pics though, thanks!

Also, I said in a post before I'm wondering/hoping about whether mine are both females or not. They're about 7 weeks now. Rosco has always been a little bigger than Boss Hogg (so I don't know if she's growing faster or just maybe a little older, I got them from the feed store). She's always been a little darker too.

Anyway, I feel pretty certain that Rosco is a female. Boss Hogg I'm not quite sure about. There's a little flip in his/her tail feathers that has me concerned. But these are my first, what do you guys think? Rosco has always been a little more dominant over Boss Hogg though. I dunno... I'm hoping Boss Hogg isn't a roo.

I can't remember if you said these are sex-links. If they are, they are both pullets. The males are much lighter... like this:

Thanks so much! I think they are sexlinks, I'm just not positive because I haven't had chickens before and I randomly picked these two from the feed store. But they looked like the red sexlinks as chicks from what I could tell. I hope they are, I'd be so bummed if they weren't both girls. Thanks again!

Oooh! Cinnamon Queen! I like that, I had to look it up. Pretty cool! THANKS!! And it lists them as being "prolific" egg layers. And they certainly are very docile. They've taken to (when I go to get them out of their coop) crawling up on my shoulders and hitching a ride that way. And they don't mind me petting them and holding them, but they prefer to shoulder surf. It's taken some getting used to having chicken butts so close to my face. My husband says I shouldn't encourage them, but they seem to like it.

Awhee, that is so cute ;) it reminds me of the 80's when people would walk around Hollywood with their birds on their shoulder..

The coop looks great! I also have had certain chickens that liked to ride on my shoulder - never seemed to cause any problems so I think it's fine.

When I was a kid, I had a banty cochin that rode on my shoulder all over the yard, even when I rode my bike - so cute!! That poor little thing put up with so much - I have photos somewhere of me carrying her around in a doll carrier in a dress.

Such a busy day today!! Business is picking up now and it will be hard for me to focus on the chickens as much as I'd like - gotta work and pay the bills! Today was fun though, went scouting for a band shoot that needs a new CD cover photo for their new album. We took the I-40 all the way to the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest, with lots of fun stops along the way. It was nice to get out and explore.

Then, on the way home, stopped by my sister's house in Flag - she had picked up 16 Cornish that they were trying to get rid of at Cal-Ranch up there for .75 a piece. She asked if we would help to butcher them and then get half the birds. I said yes but I need to do some more research on these things... the only thing I've done is 4-8 month-old roosters that we needed to get rid of.
Anyone raise cornish x for meat? What do I need to know?

Bonnie I am so looking foward to seeing your garden. Please tell me that you added some nutrients to the soil mix !I have been killing myself digging in goat and rabbit manure. I hope to see results some time in June. Up north the nights remain cold. Enjoyed your photos from the MCF.

I fertilize weekly, 16-16-16, borax, gypson, Epsom salts, and a packet of minerals. The formula seems to be working. Depending on the plant you feed 4 to 9 weeks on average. Sence I just planted/seeded, I am starting another cycle. My tomato's will need up to 20 feelings. To repeat my growing medium is 50% sawdust, about 35% sand, and 15% vermiculite.

I am 2 days behind in reading thread.

I've not raised them, but I know a little. They poop A LOT, and will be ready to process by 8-10 weeks, I believe. Some people put the food and water on opposite ends of the coop so they have to get up and move around. They grow super fast and will just sit there if allowed to. People here have raised them, so I'm sure they will chime in!
