Arizona Chickens

So, would it be bad to tell you that I use a ceramic dish for giving them both the fermented feed and free-choice egg shell? I'm actually looking for a second matching bowl because there are too many of my chickens fighting for access to the one bowl. With the higher acidity of the fermented wet feed, galvanized feeders are out of the question and plastic just degrades so fast here in Arizona... But in terms of the water, they do make a very valid point of it staying at a more constant temperature with that feeder than the metal and plastic ones. The ceramic is an excellent insulator and is much easier to clean than plastic and metal. Just not for that price, though! :smack Those ceramic brown eggs look awfully spiffy, though! And at a great price, too...
We get out ceramic bowls from yard sales & 2ND hand stores :)

Oh that is great to hear

Did you start her on vitamins?
She back to twisting a little bit, but it's not all the time.
I am hoping to pick some vitamins up this evening after dinner.

Just wanted to thank GalloDelCielo for his treadle feeder plans!!!
Built one for my ladies and their man just showed them how to use it!

They did break one side... one of the fatter ladies jumped on the open lid but I fixed it =)

i didnt post the other day when i read this but i cant stop thinking about the rooster hating neighbor. i am really sorry you are dealing with that. i must be selfish but if you are allowed to have roosters i think its downright awful of him trying to make you feel bad. saying its not fair to him that you bought them after he moved there! he bought in a rural area, i imagine if i lived up there i would have roosters too. and maybe your other neighbors in a few months might decide hey chickens arent a bad idea. i agree with another poster, get friendly with the wife and kids, then give them some baby chicks - and hope one turns into a rooster. seriously, is that the worst noise ever? in my neighborhood there are 30 (always) barking dogs. he should be happy.

that is the best looking dirt maker i have ever seen! i would like to make one of those myself, much nicer looking that the srp barrel i currently use.

kuku, i am so happy to hear your chick is doing better, i read all about wry neck last night.

a non-chicken related question.
i know many of us are also dog owners: i have 2 dogs, and am currently dog sitting for a friend of mine while she is in spain. spain is 8 hours ahead of us and she is not answering her phone since she's in bed. a n y w a y. when i got home there was a note from my daughter saying dog didnt eat breakfast, and another from husband saying dog didnt eat lunch. i took one look at her and noticed her face is swollen and she has bumps on her head. i thought maybe she got into an ant hill or bit by a bee. she cant tell me what happened. and we only feed her the food her mommy brought.
so, my question is. would you think it would be safe to give her benadryl? she isnt having difficulty breathing so i'm not concerned enough to pay the $100+ in vet fees. she just keeps rubbing her poor face on my jeans. she's so itchy.

Yes, Benadryl is fine to give to dogs. I give it to my dogs whenever they eat too many bees (I swear, they love the "zing" they get from the sting). Follow the weight guidelines, but in my experience, even if you overdose by a bit, you'll just get a super sleepy pup. She's not bleeding from the bumps, excessively salivating, or acting really off is she? Those are the symptoms my dogs have had after rattlesnake bites, and warranted emergency vet visits which were $$$$.

The evil me would be inclined to give all the neighbors' neighbors some chickens as well. And make sure that everyone got at least one rooster in the batch. For the hens' "protection" of course! Bwaahh hahh haahhh haaah haaaa!!!!

On the other hand, the rooster hating neighbor may have problems much worse than rooster noise and is choosing to fixate on the roosters because he can't do anything about the other stuff. I learned that lesson the hard way when I got screamed at by a customer once for no apparent reason. Found out later she was scheduled for brain surgery the next day and some of the stress got vented at me. You never know. So the wiser me would feel sorry for the guy. Then I'd try to get him to love chickens despite himself.
