Are these scrap cuttouts from a CnC or plasma torch? What great trellises they make.

Our Boxer/Ridgeback mix will eat every one if given enough rope. She chick sits, under supervision.
Know the feeling. Our shepherd mix, Nibbler, is very maternal with our chickens. I would trust her completely, and I think they sense that because they like her and follow her around as if she's the momma hen.

The other two... not so much. Our boxer bulldog mix, Bug, would surely love the "play" with the chickens. Though her concept of playing with them would be to repeatedly slam them to the ground (as I saw Bug do with a poor little finch she caught last weekend... I stopped her, but I don't know if the finch made it or not, didn't look great). Under direct, close supervision, she will hold herself back. But I wouldn't trust even blinking with her around them.

And Hemi, our corgi, would just eat them in one gulp if he could get to them.

Suffice to say, Nibbler is the only one who gets chicken-time around here...

Early this morning, I moved the chicks from inside the house to the small coop on my back porch, for those of you who know my setup.  I had cleaned it all out and put clean bedding in it.  The food was put in to the feed hopper and everyone took to that immediately.  I left the last of the medicated water in there so they could finish it off, too.  I was going to refill it and run one more day of it, but instead, the chicks found the watering nipples and have taken a strong preference to those.  I hadn't even shown them how to use them yet!  So now, the regular waterer has sat completely untouched from the looks of it.  It definitely makes my life easier, but that was quite unexpected.

I managed to finish plumbing in the nipple system for the new coop today.  I didn't finish any of the other stuff, like center of the roof or the door, but it's functional for now.  I'll have to make progress with that next week.  The water was the most important part.  I let them free-range this afternoon and had to put every last one of them back inside tonight.  Batman laid an egg in the nesting box, but decided that wasn't the place to roost, I guess.  The three Black Coppers and New Hampshires kept going up the ramp trying to fly through the door.  Boy, I wish I had video of that!  Maybe tomorrow...

MadBaggins: Those laser drops are gorgeous.  I'm going to have to find out where to get some in town.  Lady Kota is mighty lucky to be getting those from you, and I'm sure she'll put them to good use.  I am anxious to see those photos now!

Oh, and day two of not losing any more chicks.  Hopefully, we're done with that phase of the problems and everything gets better from here!

lol
She was joking. Those are all mine. :lau

:gig yes I was joking. I think they are wonderful art work. I'm just 5'-4", its is just me, I couldn't possibly moved one, as much as I would love to have one or two. I will be coming down to Tucson, but not until fall or winter. There are several places I would like to see, I haven't been to see in many years.

I am building this new chicken pen and coop so when I go back to work my girls will be safe and not crowded. I am fingering 20 sq ft per chicken, (4'-6" x 4'-6"), I will be topping out at 12 chickens. My new coop should be big enough, Basement and first floor 16 sq ft, first each, 4 nesting boxes, a Penthouse, about 20 sq ft or 24 sq ft. Depends if I put a floor is part of it. It will be a little hard to clean, open bottom with roosts. The 3 sides will have hardware wire. It will be interesting if the use it in the winter. I have finally settled on a design for the ramp. But first things first.

I'm cleaning up my yard, it got out of hand. Get my misting system up, right now it is jimmy rigged. My girls are using their present run now, and seem to enjoy the mister. My hose bib leaks a little, running down the hose, I put a tara cotta planter dish down to catch the water, the girls love to stand in the cool water and drink. After the 2 projects are done, back to work. When I get something to show I will.

How are all the other coops coming along. I would love to see some of the plans and innovations.
