Arizona Chickens

MaddBaggens: food for thought. Now is your time, it is never what you do that you regret, only what you do not do.

There was a time:
. . . My bag had a few matches, a blanket, a good knife, a small tin with a length of fishing line, a couple of wrights and a hocks. I would be off and happy.
(Jump foreword a few years)
. . . My bag included mosquito netting, and bug repellent " ". "
(Jump forward 40 years)
. . . My boat and truck a fully packed, including 2 each light, medium and heavy rods, level winding, open face spinning, and ofcourse a boat road just in case. My tent a 4 season, a queen size air mattress, a 15 w photo cell to keep one of my 3 deep cell battery's charged for phone. And an AC refrigerator ..... You can see were this is going.

AHH! Gone are the day of back packs hanging in the hall, awaiting my hand.

ENJOY HAVE FUN

Okay, so I am totally new to candling and wondering when these babies will ever come - just so you know, I did not save eggs at the right temperature and then put them under her all at once. I collected the duck eggs in the morning for 4 days and gave her 1 the first day and 2 each consecutive day. I didn't know any better - first time my silkie had gone broody and my sister wanted ducks so I wanted to give my silkie something to hatch...
Anyway, do you think these eggs look good or bad?
Here are the dates/ages (in no particular order of the photos because I did not mark them and have no idea which ones are which) of the eggs based on the days I gave them to her....counting the day I gave them as the first day.
Egg 1 - day 30
Egg 2&3 - day 29
Egg 4&5 - day 28
Egg 6&7 - day 27

These photos were all shot from above so the eggs are laying in my hands similar to the way they were in the nest.

I am not an expert by any means but when we just hatched out chicks in the class, they were much fuller by the time they were ready to hatch. You could only see the air sac in the last few days. And we candled multiple times each week so the kids could watch development. These don't look like they have viable babies in them-hopefully someone with more experience will chime in.

If they don't hatch out, I would get her some day olds soon. I think another 3 weeks sitting on eggs would be too much for her.

There is a chick under the broody! Well, at least one, I saw its little head sticking out this morning, hopefully more will hatch. Meanwhile, it looks like my olive egger is starting to think about going broody.

Happy Holiday W/E to my fellow Arizonians! Our community has a donated Party Center for Community get-togethers. We have a large deep pit for cooking-the prop owner just installed a new electric winch for lowering the cooking box-so that will be getting its' trial run. We will clean it out & start anew w/fresh wood tonight. There will be beef, pork & turkey to wrap & put in there tonight. We will open tomorrow around 4 p.m. & be ready to feast! Another favorite at our potlucks is deviled eggs-they are one of the first things to be gone, as we can munch on those while setting up, & getting it all ready. We expect 60+ people.

I took the whole week off! Cheers!

I'm gonna kick it off with a 3 day light backpack trip. I'm getting dropped off at the top of Mt Lemmon this morning and will be back at my car, in Sabino Canyon, sometime monday. No tent or sleeping bag, just a large day pack.

Have a good one!

That was me and I'll make a note of those photos, too. I got permission for some that were in the comb contests and they were awesome, but I don't remember which ones. Thank you for helping!
