Arizona Chickens

I have 2 new, three week, old Ameraucanas. I have a flock of 5 full size hens. right now my wife has them under a heat lamp in the house in a rubbermaide. She and I were wondering if it would be safe to put them in with the flock in the nesting box? Thoughts?

I would not recommend putting chicks that young in with older hens. If you do decide to try, I would watch them carefully to make sure the hens don't hurt the little ones. They are likely to peck on them quite a bit, and if they draw blood, not hard to do with a big bird picking on a little bird, then it will get worse and the chicks will get killed.

I lost a chicken from heat last year and vowed to never let it happen again. it was that day last year it got to 117. Poor girl was laying in the water bowl. This year I have 5 misters, 3 never used, large plastic oil pans filled with fresh water, a 5 inch batter powered fan in the common shaded area under the trampoline and a handheld fan hanging in the nesting boxes. I think as long as you tun off the misters at night you shouldn't have a problem with mold or pathogens. It's so dry in the valley in the morning before I turn the misters on again the area is dry. I also put a small kiddie pool filled with loose dirt so they can have real good dirt baths (they love it).

My heat stroke hen is looking okay now! I went out there with a cup of vinegar and a toothbrush and cleaned the mister heads. Hopefully that will get them misting well enough that I don't have to remove them from the PVC pipe.

I have 4 peps @ 4 weeks, 2 older ones with the oldest I think 9 weeks. I have 8 pullets, over 6 mo. 2 want to attack and kill all the Peps. The rest only picks at them when they come in range or ignores them until one shows interest in what she is eating. I think it depends on the older girls temporment. I am introducing them with supervision as the big boss hen. Only when I'm not looking with Bon or Lucy try to go after them. I think they are still a little young. I have been told in a big enough area, with a lot of safety hiding places it is Possable to let little ones free range with the big girls, not advisable.

14 eggs today.

I will be selling all of my chickens and moving to north Phoenix within the month.

Sad to loose this awesome hobby, glad we'll be closer to the kids schools.

Oh please tell me this is a joke?? I will talk to DH and a neighbor that might want a few extra?? If he says yes do you have any
blue or olive layers??

Wait...wha...huh? Noooooo! You were the first person I bought my chickens from when I got started. You are like my "chicken daddy". :(

I guess I should ask. What is the preferred method to clean the egg? I just used cool water on this one.
Only clean is there is dirt/droppings to wash off. And then use water that is as warm as your hands can stand. Cool water drive any germs inside the shell; warm water keeps them out. And if the egg is TOO dirty, then toss it.

I have 6 week olds free ranging with full grown hens and 1 rooster. They will eat side by side with the big girls when I throw out treats. I've only seen a couple of minor pecks from the hens. I'm surprised at how well they all get along. The chicks do have their own separate coop when everyone goes to bed. I think I'd have a different story if I tried to put the chicks in the coop with the big girls.

On another note, I have 4 more broodys.
