Arizona Chickens

You peeps are scaring me with all this heat stress stuff. My girls aren't showing any signs of stress other than walking around with their mouths open during the hottest points of the day.
They are always in the shade and have all the ventilation they need. Very little sun hits the run at all they way I have it set up. I only set up the brick cooler a few days ago, but the girls definitely like it.
This morning I soaked down the west end of the run. When we come home around 5-5:30 we put some ice in their water, but the water is still reasonably cool anyway. They do spend the hottest parts of the day laying in the sand under the coop.

Anyway, I'm all worried about my girls after all this talk.

X 2...guess we need to be uber vigilant during summer months.....high maintenance season for landscaping and pets/livestock...I will keep checking on them throughout the day despite all the preventative measures we're using...
sure wish chickens could sweat

I had my baby today! 7 pounds 13 ounces, 20 and 3/4 inches long, and the cutest baby girl I've ever seen!

Quote: While I understand the concept of not making them face extreme changes (air conditioned cold to fry an egg on the sidewalk hot--and back and forth like this), the concept of fans and misters is to mitigate the hottest of the day--keeping it from extreme changes imposed by nature. Depending on how you set it up misters do not necessarily create the dank environment mentioned. I've known people who found a way to put them on a timer so that they came on for ten or fifteen minutes every hour--enough to dissipate the heat without creating a bog. My fans run pretty much 24/7, my misters a few hours a day, depending on how hot it gets.

Sold 6 today. Will continue selling until they are all gone.

Don't know when we will close escrow, but we are getting the house painted and the roof done so that we can sell our current home.

Boston will come down on the 21st to remove the grow out pens.

Don't know how long it will take to sell our current home, but whomever buys it will have a chicken coop with an AC unit.
