AWESOME! I was so proud of my first egg!

I got the mister system all hard piped and valved and working beautifully. Now, I just need the girls to figure out it's a good thing.

Mine were afraid of the water mister at first too. After about a week they would lay down-wind of the mister -close enough to feel the cooler air but not so close the water touched them. After the 2nd week, now they will stand right in the misty water and forage for greens in my grazing frame...they don't even care anymore :)

SERAMA HATCHING EGGS

I'm looking for some local serama hatching eggs. I would rather not have them shipped. I will pick them up. I would like up to 12.

Anyone have any serama hatching eggs available?

Thanks,

I've got a whole maternity wardrobe that I don't need any more. Its mostly L and XL, fairly casual in style, although I do have a couple of nice summery dresses and a couple of cool weather dresses that would be nice for a holiday party. If you are interested, PM me.

In more chicken related news, I went out to the coop to collect eggs, and six of the eight eggs Notinoz gave me had hatched! I wasn't even expecting them to hatch until Tuesday, at the earliest, but there were six cute, fluffy little chicks. But the real surprise was who was in the nest with them. The blue Marans that I got from Mahonri appears to have chased the Olive Egger off of the nest, and was all fluffed up and taking care of the babies.

I woke up this morning to find this in my coop....

The one on the left was in the bottom of the coop under the roost and the one on the right was on a door beam directly behind the roost. They are both the same color so I am assuming they are both from the same girl. My question is, is it normal or just weird that she laid her egg from the roosting bar? And it seems like she laid 2 eggs because neither one of them were there yesterday or last night when they roosted, I checked the whole coop to make sure I didn't miss anything. Also one of the girls keeps going into the nest boxes, sits for about 5-10 minutes making a bunch of noise then leaves....no egg...nothing...pretty normal or no?

GreatWhiteAfro I would say that the behavior that you described IS normal if you hens/pullets are just learning the ropes. Do you think that the texture on the shells from the busted eggs is rather thin ? That is also normal in the begining and occasionally through the laying cycle of a hen. When the system is just begining to kick in or slowing down because it need a rest.

Every once in a while one of my hens lays an egg in the middle of the run or coop. Maybe they are caught unaware that it is time to go to the nesting spot. And for some hens the process takes longer to learn. They also are truly creature of habit.
