Arizona Chickens

Powder, my white Americona, is a worry for me. She is very vocal. Not, so it seems related to laying. At feeding time, when she sees me, and she just have times she has a lot to say walking around. She has also had some problems. I fear I was going to lose her with the heat, she just dose not look healthy, and she is so light. But she is still. Giving me at least 5 eggs a week. If she is unhealthy she would stop laying? I hope. I think it is just her.

I have for some time seen a pair of ring neck doves land near or on the wall of my yard, then fly off. They have now joined the freeloaders, the rock doves. There are not that many of them around here. I wonder how comman are they? I have seen them in pairs, but not docked up. Do they live as pairs, flocking only at certain times?

Hoping you find a good home for her. Our RIR is our loudest. Every morning!!!! She is a great producer but holy cow, I hope the neighbors can't hear her with their windows closed.
She wasn't too bad in the winter, but the sun wasn't coming up at 5am then. We also have EE (actually olive egger - when she lays an egg - buts that's a whole other story) and BA.
I would have a flock of BA's over the other two. Ours is a great producer, beautiful in the sunlight, typically quiet except for an egg song and just a love. I guess the RIR takes after
the rest of us loud mouths in our family! She fits right in.
Ha!! Yeah, I was out near the coop the other morning when one of my EE's was laying and she was quiet and calm, it was that RSL in the coop being super noisy and bothering the laying girls!! My wife actually found her a home (same lady that took my other EE cockerel, whom the lady said turned out to be one of her best roosters!) I hate to get rid of a great bird that's really close to laying but the noise....I can hear her in my bathroom upstairs....she's that loud!!

i need to make some money!! Do any of you guys have ideas?? My chickens seem to eat my money. And lets just say that my 16 year old boy salary cannot handle it

Two things You could supplement their diet with grasses, vegetable scraps and sprouts. There are post on this thread about growing sprouts.

Networking with church groups, neighbors and family might pick up some type of yard jobs and other work that you may be able to learn to do. Just today I met a highschool student who answered a request for work by his teacher. He does yard work and is a good student. His parents gave him a yellow Mustang since he does well in school but he needs money for gas maintenance and insurance.

Ring necks are invasive, nasty-tempered doves that drive off the native doves. Pretty, but that is the only positive thing I can say about them.

If you live where you can get flood irrigation, it is by far the least expensive way to water your yard. Less than $100 for the YEAR. You will still have a water bill for that water that comes from the city.

I've never understood what is wrong with crab grass? Weeds that have stickers I understand being bad (I hate burr clover!), but grasses that simply don't happen to be the "preferred" species?

Yes flood irrigation is lovely if you live where it's available. But that is only parts of Phoenix and Tucson; the rest of the state we are at the mercy of the water companies and AZ water just raised their rates.

Crab grass is a short lived weed. It will crowd out the real grass, grow quick then die off leaving large brown spots all over.

Hey everyone. We got our new girls two weeks ago but the more we time we spend with them the more we notice one of them "Rossevelt" looks more like a rooster. Please let me know what you all think? We need to get rid of her. :-( and get another new baby ASAP. "She" has the thing on her head growing more and more each day and the other two do not have it. If you blow up the pic you can see it clearly.

It would help to see a picture of this one next to the others. Are they all the same breed? A/he looks kind of big. What are the chances of this chick being a Cornish X? If it is, it'll grow REALLY fast. Either way, 2 weeks is a bit early for most breeds to be able to sex them. Some if the experts on here may be able to help.
