Arizona Chickens

Are the eggs developing. All mine fried in this heat. What kind of chicks?

Partridge silkie rooster..
Buff silkie hen
Blue Andalusian hen
Black austrolorp hen
Du' ullce Millie Fluer bantam hen
Partridge Cochin hen
Lavender Americana bantam hen
The offspring of two that we have from her are all white with some dark grey feathers,
featherd feet, top head feathers and bearded. Really meet looking..
Also the speckled Sussex might have a few of her eggs under her?? She went broody quick
after just hatching our last eggs.. I have three of our friends that have 5-10 of our last hatch
from the same hens.. I have not seen any of them but most of them have extra toes..some
have the black skin.. We had 5-7 silkies and all of them have been mostly buff looking.. A
little bit darker in their tail feathers..
No I have not checked any of the eggs.. Karen our silkie pecks and gets real upset.. So I
don't really care either way how many hatch.. Last time we moved Lorraine during day 14-15
she left the eggs to long I think.. Out of 18 eggs I think there were 6 that did not hatch..
. So who knows how many are going to hatch.. None of the other chickens bothered the babies
when they were out and about after they were a week old..
At this point I think there are about 14-19 eggs.. I did try and count after Karen decided to join her..
She went in two days and layer after Loraine had been sitting on them... I was wondering how come
we ended up with so many silkies.. She is a stinker..

Hey boy, I'm talking' to ya, boy. Look me in the eye like a man, boy. Like a man...

Do my tonsils look swollen to you? I think I'm sick. More worms will help.

Your roo is fabulous... I especially love the close up!

Had to turn on the misters early today, its gonna be a scorcher today. The girls did lay this morning though!

Also with all this grass talk...I'm considering putting some sod in my run to help with the mud from running the misters all day, thoughts from you all are appreciated!

Makeshift swamp cooler for the roost. It ain't pretty but it's working better than I expected. I used a pump from a water fountain and bought the pan and pad for less than $10 at HomeDepot. I covered the pad with left over chicken wire and wired it to the coop. Water and electricity... be careful. After cutting the holes in the plastic tube bigger and bigger I finally got a good flow and the pad is swollen. The fan is on boards across the water pan, stable enough and dry. At 105 outside it was in the low 80's in the corner of the coop. We're limiting them to the coop and not letting them into their run, it's just too darn hot there. Later in the afternoon we'll 'chain the hound' (an untrustworthy spaniel) and let them out into the backyard and garden to cool off in the wet grass.
Spoiled chickens? You bet.

well I came home from the morning movies with the kids to an absolute disaster. we had several hens down with heat stroke and one dead in the coop. the kids were just hysterical but helped to pull out the dying hens and grab the hose on the patio to cool them down quickly. it will be touch and go still for 3 Basque, 1 FBCM, 1 SBEL, 1 Porcelain silkie, but I lost my other SBEL. I have the misters still going in the yard, the broodies smashed all the eggs which is just as well. I imagine the eggs are fried anyway. wow, I have had a super crappy chicken and duck year.

That's tarrable :hugs I wish I could do something. The city gets hotter then as you go out, then the open desert. I have been lucky, my. Girls seem to be holding up. :fl I hope you can find away to keep them cooler.

I have the mister on for the girls outside in the run, and the A/C on inside the coop for my hen who is in there laying right now. When it gets too hot outside they go inside the coop where it stays in the 80's. Mine are spoiled too. The A/C unit was cheap, hubby installed it in the window of the enclosed coop, and it uses very little electricity to keep it cool for the peak times of the day in the summer.
