Arizona Chickens

A fun story. It's a small chicken world...

Was so excited to meet one of our BYC fellow chicken lovers RANDOMLY at my work yesterday. I am a computer tech for a certain fruit company, a lovely lady and her daughter came to see me for help. She turned on the computer, and to my surprise, an adorable black silkie hen was her desktop picture. We spoke of chickens, then BYC and then realized we "knew" each other from these forums! And that's how friendships are made. It was great unexpected meetup.

One of those life experiences where the world reminds you that things you enjoy are better enjoyed along with others.

Cheers!

I have to share this with you guys. My rooster was with the mama hen and the chicks and he kept his head down. He'd close his eyes and let the chicks peck at his wattles. He even let them jump on his back. By the time I got my phone to take a picture there was only one chick left on him, but you can see how he kept his head down and didn't move. He really is a gentle roo.

No way that is awesome... I love having a rooster.. Kent is a gentle roo..

People that have animals are better than people that don't... I have gone to homes where there are NO ANIMALS,
It is weird, really weird... Did you kow that if children that are raised with dogs, they have a whole other SENSE of
awareness ??? I'm not talking about a sense of responsibility.. Pretty cool huh!!
Love this kinda stuff..

Sonoran I did PM you with a question..

Here it is for ya all... It is what I had thought anyway,
Two broody hens, hatch date sat- today... At first there was about 9 eggs.
I took 4 out.. Then a few weeks later I checked and there are 12 eggs..
Yesterday in the morning I checked for pipping. One egg had been broken. All I could see
was the thick white membrane, no movement I thought dud.. Then last night I checked again
there was movement, this morning it was gone.. They or someone must of eaten it.. Now another
one is the same.. I really don't think any will hatch with that heat wave that came threw..
So anyway, what do ya all think??

I got 2 barred rocks & 1 mystery chick from redrockrooster.. To put under the two broody's this evening...
Can't wait to see how that goes... Thank you for ordering those chicks...

I forgot to mention, I saw a raccoon near my house. I would have sworn up and down that raccoons would only be found around the urban parks and lakes, and riparian areas like Tanque Verde or Sabino Canyon. Not the west side of Tucson, miles from any parks or lush riparian areas! My coop and run are dog proof, so also raccoon proof, but wow, a raccoon. I was so surprised, it took my mind a few seconds to reconcile what my eyes were seeing.

I'm catching up on the thread here. But holy crap! I wouldn't count on anything being raccoon proof. I don't know if you've dealt with them much, I'm from the midwest so they are just about the main predator there. They are incredibly clever, can squeeze through really narrow spaces, and are very persistent. They are also brutal. As adorable as they are from a distance. Dogs and racoons aren't in the same league. So just a heads up, you may want to do a walk-around and check that everything is really secure, reinforce what you can. Because if they find you, they'll be back.

Just went out & found the baby chick dead.. Fully formed.. The other one will probably end up the same.. Most
of our original older flock was hanging around the 2 broodies the last few days? Don't know what that means?
I sense they sense something could be wrong or they are like " wake up" to that poor little chick.. I did remove it..

EXCITING! My order of 15 brown egg layer assortment (plus one Meal Maker) from Meyer arrived today also. Can you post photos of what you received? I didn't get any with feathered feet! Right now I'm thinking I got 6 buff orpingtons, 4 Black Astralorps, and 6 something else.... I posted photos of mine in the "Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??" thread.
