Arizona Chickens

i agree with twinklin. the feed stores and co-ops dont tell you that you have to buy a heat lamp when people go to look at the cute chicks and end up buying 5. perhaps call a local feed store and ask them what their policy is. if she wont let it go a refund may be in order, but i certainly wouldnt give her more chicks, thats not reasonable at all. all you would be required to do is make her whole again, not give her anything for free.
hope it all works out in your favor. i vote no refund or new chicks, lol

OK. I need suggestions on a hairy situation. Ive had an AZ local buy chicks from me the past two times i've ordered from hatcheries. The first batch were brown layer pullets and this batch was 6 dUccle chicks. I threw in extra chicks this last time. Even though she only paid hatchery price for the chicks. She texted me four days ago saying they died two days after purchase. It's taken until an hr ago for her to finally call and tell me what happened. They all died after 36hrs of purchase with no symptoms of illness besides lethargic behavior. When I asked about the brooder temperature she confessed she had no idea they needed a lamp. Then went on to say she feels I am at fault for not telling her they needed a lamp. I did however explain the difference between bantam chicks, gave reference to BYC website and let her know she needed to keep them warm. I assumed she knew about chick care, she seemed to have little to not interest in talking.

I have no idea how her first batch of chicks made it, i assume since these are bantams and it's been raining out they chilled. Her prior batch was standard fowl and the weather was very hot during their first week. Now, she wants a full refund AND replacement chicks. I have neither for her until the end of my hatch. Frankly, I do not think I should offer her anymore chicks without proof of death and proof she has purchased a lamp. I want to wash my hands of the people who blame others for their lack of education. And I want to cry to think that 7 amazing little dUccle chicks could have been in my brooder, safe and happy.

You don't owe her anything. It was her mistake, not yours. There was nothing wrong with the chicks. She probably realizes that and won't call you back.

is anyone familiar with this plant? what in the world is growing in my yard?
the black barrel is my compost bin and many things volunteer in that area. i let this grow because it vaguely resembled cantaloupe - but it is definitely NOT that. those spikes you can see in the second picture are all over the stems and leaves. doing an internet search the only thing that looked similar was oak-leaf thorn apple, and i dont believe its that either.. chickens wont touch it.
any ideas? i'm dont know all the native plants.

redrocketrooster. I feel it is unfortunate that you are in the middle of that person's problem. But the problem is hers not yours. I would tell her that she needs to order from an on-line hatchery and to read the literature that some of the hatcheries supply. Tell her that you have gone out of business selling chicks (to her anyway)
I'd love to tell her that but if she sees my ads up I think shell call me out...

Thanks for your support guys. I'm going to avoid giving her anything. I really hope she doesn't call me back or try to show up at my house. Her last sentence was that she is going to "talk to her husband and see what he says".

You can check with DesertMarcy for the Black Copper Marans. She's in Tucson, but they were an excellent quality and worth the drive! I would get ahold of CbNovick and find out where she got her New Hampshires. I don't think she was breeding them for sale, but we got some of her extras. They are gorgeous, too.
I've got about 10 extra German New Hampshires for sale right now. Originally did not think I was going to show these, so didn't worry about stubs (small feathers between the toes). But now I've changed my mind, and am selling off the pullets that have the most stubs. 3-4 month olds. Yes, and Black and Blue Copper Marans available, too.

One other thing is you gave her healthy chicks. If I buy a puppy from the store and then proceed to leave it out in the heat (or cold) and it dies that isn't the breeders/store's fault. I failed to provide basic care for my pet. I wouldn't expect a refund, and I don't necessarily think she's entitled to one. I would just remain polite but firm and point out that your chicks are perfectly healthy, and death by user error isn't your fault.

I can understand why she's upset, but you not telling her she needs a lamp is just silly. No one at the pound told me I needed to buy a litter box for my cat.... or that lilies were poisonous to him. He of course ate one of my plants in the yard and I was clueless. We saved the furball at an expense, but those things were removed from the yard pronto. They made me sneeze anyway. I never would have thought of it. I asked the pound later what may have caused his illness, and that was one of the first things they suggested. The adoption lady was polite but clearly thought I was a moron. If he had died I wouldn't have tried to get my adoption fee refunded. Frankly I would have just been devastated that "I" killed my cat with ignorance. I then got to pay around $800 to correct the situation, and I'm really lucky he survived.

Frankly I didn't know chicks reallyI needed a heat lamp when I got them. I even asked about it, but they thought they'd be fine without one since they were about 2-3 weeks old, and to just not leave them outside since it was still cold at night. Peep & Cad both survived, but I guarantee if I ever get fluffy chicks again there will be a heat lamp. I should have known better though. We put heat lamps on the piglets growing up for golly sake.

Live and learn.

Quick Overview = She is asking for a refund AND more chicks, so she is basically trying to extort you.

My first & immediate reaction to this, would be to tell her to go pound sand! She made it a point to say that she was going to "tell her husband", thereby implying a simplistic threat. Let her tell her husband. Get a tape recorder & and as you answer the phone, politely inform her/him that the call is being recorded for legal purposes. Then inform them there will be NO REFUND or replacement. If he or she so much as hints as causing you ANY trouble, you now have auditory proof to play for the police. In the eyes of the law, any verbal threats can be considered simple assault, so she is already treading on very thin ice legally. People of her kind really disgust me, especially when you consider that living things suffered and died needlessly because of her ignorance/stupidity/carelessness. Please fight her tooth and nail & DO NOT give in! I wish I lived closer, i'd be happy to help should you need any kind of physical presence or even just moral support. I know some VERY "colorful characters" locally, who really come in handy in situations like these. Please keep us posted as to the outcome of this situation. Sorry you are having to go through it, I know from experience that it isnt pleasant.

It looks like the prickly pear tuna are coming in to season again. The ones near me look awfully ripe. Is anyone else planning on harvesting them for jams, jelly, syrup or just adding to your lemonade? I hear they make a phenomenal margarita. Just curious. Food and homesteading has been the topic of conversation here at work today.

When you buy an animal from a pet store or adopt one from a shelter they don't tell you that you need to feed it and give it water. They expect you know the basics if you're buying the animal. If she didn't know what she was doing she can't ask you to replace the chicks. I wouldn't give her any more. I personally would try to get out of refunding her the money as well since she admitted she didn't know she needed a lamp and it's her responsibility to know that. If she just said they died I would give her a refund but she already admitted to not caring for them properly.

X2! Really
Who would give you chicks , plus $?? What planet are they from??

Tell her that you don't have any more chicks available at this time, And keep telling her that every time she contacts you to ask again. If she is insistent, tell her that as the purchaser of new, baby animals she needed to do at least a little research on their care! If she missed knowing that they needed to be kept warm WHEN YOU HAD ALREADY TOLD HER THAT, then what else might she have done wrong? Did she feed them chick starter and water in a chick fount? Did she provide appropriate protection from predators and other dangers?
