MAGICCHICKEN yes and no. I saw some staining on things I handled. They cover themselves because it sometimes stains. Can you cover the area with something? I would love to know if it works on other people. I figure what ever it was it had to have been resistant to all the meds. We have talked about, before on here how we are developing SUPER Diseases. That is one of the inspirations to first go natural, using Antibiotics and manufactured chemicals only when all else fail, trying not to develop SUPPER MITES, LICE, and other PARASITES, along with chicken diseases. Preventative Inoculations work to stop before they can develop, look at Infantile paralysis (Poliomyelitis).

The only reason that I know for storing eggs pointed side down is for hatching purposes. The chick can more easily peck out through the end with the larger space for the air sack. If they peck into the spot where the membrane is touching the shell they can drown in the fluid. So developing the habit of storing the eggs with the pointed side down will get you ready when you want to hatch your own chicks.  

Even eating eggs should be stored point down.  Keeps them fresher.

If you think about it, there seems to be no good reason for packaging eggs with their wide end up as opposed to plunking them into the cartons wide-end down: either way will keep the egg from rolling off. Yet cardboard cartons and the plastic egg-tray in refrigerators are made to accommodate a fat-end-up egg. Is there something more here than just coincidence?
In fact, there is: the reason it’s smarter to store your eggs with the fat end up is that the egg itself does not completely fill the interior of the shell. If you crack open a hard-boiled egg carefully at the fat end, you will see that the white part of the egg, called the albumen, does not quite reach the shell — there’s a pocket of air in-between the two. That isn’t the case for the narrow end of the egg, which fits snugly.
That pocket of air allows for the presence, and reproduction, of bacteria. This is not to say there’s something wrong with your egg: any chicken egg will have the air pocket and some measure of bacteria inside it. The trick, then, is to keep the bacteria as far as possible from the yolk, which is much more susceptible to bacterial infection. Albumen contains bacteria-killing enzymes while yolk does not. In other words, the yolk is more perishable than the white.
If you hold the egg fat end down, that air pocket has a tendency to rise — not completely through the egg, but enough to reach the yolk. By storing eggs fat-end up, the pocket of air stays away from the yolk, and the egg stays fresh longer.

Thank you for the info.. We harvest our eggs with tongs, we don't want to disturb the BLOOM on the outside of the egg. From what I
understand that also helps keep the egg fresh & protection from bacteria. When I use my hands & if I there are wet I can feel the invisible BLOOM..
I explain it to friends that we share our eggs with.. It is like dog slobber invisible & slimy. You can feel it when you rince the egg before
use.. We do store our eggs on the counter when we use the tongs.. If I touch them I use cook them with in the next few days..

The main thing I took from that egg storing article was that I could store my eggs in the fridge or not, upside down, inside out and I would have good eggs for at least 2 months.

Lol, I won't ask! His Marine days were way before we got together (Desert Storm) but once a Marine, always a Marine. And he does LOVE our chickens! Spoils them rotten. Even on my current little suburban lot, our 6 girls have 2 coops and run of the yard! I'm a little afraid what he'll do with more property and no chicken limit

Lol, I won't ask! His Marine days were way before we got together (Desert Storm) but once a Marine, always a Marine. And he does LOVE our chickens! Spoils them rotten. That's the problem with Marine's. he would say romantic things like "needs a wife that has his back", "took me hunting when he know he loved me, just to see how I handled it. I never complained, got the short straw and got the swamp, he walked the thicket, his son got the opening where the deer would break out. I obeyed orders, got right in there and helped field dress. After that I had his heart. MARINE's, what's up with them? When 18 in self defense, with Canadian Mounted Police and other Canadian Police charging in to save him and his wife, he killed 2 men wounded a third, the Canadian Police got the 4th. (its a long story). In Vietnam he was 200% Marine. But he couldn't kill a mouse that we had in the Garage because she was so cute with those shinning black eyes, had baby's and so helpless. That is when I found out why the mouse trap was tripped, I had just put poison out. It was to late, we rushed to the garage..... They were all dead. I know he would love my chickens if he were here today, he would be all for the party.... As long as he didn't have to possess a chicken he know. He would probably chick on the girls before greeting me.

I think one of our New Hampshires started laying. I found a smaller egg in the nesting box yesterday that has completely different coloring than any other egg we have. What do you experts think?

It may well be...my pullets started laying about 2-3 weeks ago....darker since it's a newbie egg...they may lighten up a bit and most likely will lose those spots after they get going good (-:

Yeah hubby & kids were like CHICKENS!! No way.. But they are getting use to them.. Can't wit to find out what you get.. I would get extra
just in case you end up with a roo..

We have only 3 back yard chickens right now. RIR, Black Australorp and Olive Egger. Olive Egger is a real slacker but nice eye candy and pretty comical to watch so she's safe for now. My DH pampers them more than me.

. He wanted nothing to do with them. When they started laying eggs and following him around the yard, his feelings changed dramatically. He calls them the girls now and asks me about them daily. I love this chapter in our lives. I would love to have more but don't want to crowd my girls. That means building another tractor or actual coop and in 113 degree weather, I'm not even sold on that. We'll have to see what the cooler weather brings. Definitely going to get more meaties in the fall. Likely going to try the red ones. Can't remember the name right now.
