Arizona Chickens

Often, you'll get a faster and sometimes more appropriate help in the Emergency Forum.

Now, my guess would the heat. Bring her inside if you can, and put her in a cool, but not cold, bath. Regular tap water temperature is probably fine. Also, make sure to give her water with electrolytes in it, like Pediasure. As she professes some, try a softer food like scrambled eggs or raw yogurt. Both are excellent.

Keep us posted.

Hello there,

I'm relocating to Bullhead City from Orange County (close to beach) and I'm getting concerned about moving my BR from cool to HOT weather! Could anyone send me suggestions/links on the best coop design, etc. or anything else I should be aware of regarding Bullhead. My coop here was made primarily for keeping warm at night and I know that will not definitely not work in Bullhead.

Many thanks

click on the "my coop" link on the people who post here and you'll see quite a few different coops that are good for this weather.

I built the Garden Coop for my chickens, with some changes for the heat. http://www.thegardencoop.com/ Longer roof, metal,  tilted down to block the sun, not allow more sun in like the original design.  Based on advice from Gallo here, I insulated the roof and coop with a product called Reflectix to keep the heat out.  Made the coop with a removable 4th side, so that they aren't closed up in the summer (the removable side opens into the enclosed run, so they are still safe from predators.  The coop/run is 100% shaded during the day.  Everything works fairly well, the coop/run is MUCH cooler inside than outside.

The hot weather SUCKS for chickens, much more so than cold weather.  I work all day, and am not able to give them ice and cold treats throughout the day, though my chickens do appreciate such treats on the weekends!  Some folks have set up misters which work well to keep the chickens cool.  I have 2 shallow pans that I fill up each day with water--the chickens like to hang out in the water and cool off.  I haven't had chickens for very long, but so far they've made it through the summer.

Glad you reminded me to put water out for them to put their feet in... Thx.. :)

I have very little to entertain kids, it depend on the kid, I do not have cable, and my XBox Controller has only one battery, and lasts about 4 or 5 minutes. And most of all we are going to be killing chickens and dressing them. It all depends on the kid. They are welcome, we will manage.

I've got two Silkies you can have. One is a cockerel and the other is 42 weeks old. She hasn't laid a single egg, still! And since my wife is mad at me for the bunny mishap, she can't get much more angry at me! Lmao! Just kidding. She still wants them both around...
AAAAAAACCCCCKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!! Step away from the silkie roo. I know a lady that would probably buy him from you to keep as a pet. Send me a PM if that interests your wife.

Also, I had a dark brahma hen that laid her first egg at 11 months old! Patience is a virtue.......

One more request.. A vet that won't be upset when we refuse canser treatment on a dog is 12 years old.

Dr.baulmer is in foothills. A bit far maybe but we've used his practice for over nineteen years. His vets are honest.....if the treatment is too costly or is more trouble for the animal they will not argue. We refused to have our elderly cat undergo traumatic surgery but his practice was the only clinic to be happy with treating her symptoms and making her more comfortable.
He's experienced with exotics too. :) He's treated our cats, dogs, snakes, chickens, sugar gliders, chinchillas, rabbits and rodents.

LoL. No, I may joke about it, but we aren't getting rid of them. They've become her pets. Thanks for the offer, though.

my kids are down with processing, they dont help much but they understand the basics and enjoy the end result. my young son will probably just play on his game thing all day so he can do that at grandpas house. might still bring tweenager, but thinking about filling the extra seats with cockerels...
