Arizona Chickens

I have a 5th, her name is Miracle if she lives. If she dose make it, her will to live is very strong, and if she is a he, I will try to keep him, if I can't I will have to find him a forever home,

Miracles story; broke thu about 9:30 AM, at noon I covered it back up with a wet paper towel. About an hr ago I checked. A pinky finger nail size shell was lifted up and I could see the egg tooth of the beek. I removed the sliver of shell and peaked in. It looked like the membrane was coff the shell, not sure. I took a wet QueTip and touched the beek, it was alive....... :love
I slowly started to remove shell, shell with no membrane attached, but I was not removing the shell from the membrane, that was drying to the little thing. When I could get the tip of the que tips in I dampened the membrane trying to hydrate it. There was blood, a lot of it. As the membrane softened she rallied to life and struggled, bleed more.

I helped her out of the shell, that was easy, it was her white vail constricting her, pulled on her, the more she fought to free herself, she bleed. I had a wet towel around her but it could not soften her tomb, she bleed more then any little body could possibly hold. I know not how to make her stop struggling. She is quite, and breathing softly. If she lives is will be a metrical. I know she would die in the shell as it was, I do not know, nor will I ever know if I did her good or not.

There is still peeping from other eggs, I shall give them time and see...... To marrow is day 21.

-------------------------

It is 6:30 Little Miracle is still alive. Lightly breathing a week peep, but still alive for 2 hours.

This is absolutely AMAZING. Positive thoughts being sent your way. Hang in there little Miracle - you can do it!

Little Miracle is still trying to live. This is impossible, 3 hours, the will to live all it is that is keeping her alive. I wonder IF I hd ex ray vision and know that the membrane had dried to her body, and I could have hydrated her with the shell holding her still if she would not have started bleeding. :fl

Angle had pasty butt, I think, to night. I washed her rump and compared her to her hatch mates

What I've done: plain yogurt w/crumble, I made fresh vitamin and probiotics water w/ addition of Apple sider vinegar with mother, now making 1/2 gal instead of gal. Will make fresh every other day. What else can I do. Olive oil?

PS: Basil is always full of piss and vinegar...... Off on a run.

LKD, i had a chick hatch similar to your miracle. she's almost 3 months old now and the most loving chick i've raised in ... ever... its possible. keep us posted.

the above chick does look like thats swollen abdomen, keep checking to see if she is pooping now that her blockage is removed. maybe massage? i dont know if its common in chickens but we have massaged kittens and opossum to help them go.

Little Miracle is trying to get up, peeping seems stronger. She (positive thinking) is truly a miracle. Next repot AM to morrow. I believe if she makes it thru the night she might make it. Just can't believe it. :love

Thank you notinoz2007, I just massaged Angles belly, it has gone down a little... Maybe stuff is now moving. I will use a warn water sitz bath tomorrow morning.

Could not sleep, got up to check on Little Miracle, she has flipped over and holding her head up. The last egg to make a crack in its shell has not moved or peeped. Got a feather, warm water. Could get tip of feather in the crack. She is a live but barely. Was worried the same thing was happening to #6. I started to remove shell, got hotter water and kept dipping feather into water to keep the 3rd Membrane hydrated. Took me over a hour, very slow work. Pealing off shell, then slowly removing the white layer, then the wet transparent layer, I discovered an even thinner one remains on the chick. I held her until she wiggled and kicked herself free from it shell. Placed into the incubator the chick. Is not the fighter like Little Miracle. One of 2 things. #6 is very tired after trying to pick an opening, or he will fail to thrive. Anther option, may have bran damage do to lake of air.

I will post pictures of Little Miracle, if she lives through the cent 7 hours.

I read somewhere that hatching eggs this time of the year can cause problems with the pullets when they first lay eggs. Is this true?

If your asking if hatching out hens during Fall will impact their egg laying/production....This would be the first i've heard of it. I maybe could see how having pullets hatched and adapted to colder weather may cause a delay in egg production when the heat in AZ sneaks up on them. That could be a breed that is not hardy tho. My favorite time of year is when it's coldest.

Most hatcheries start hatching chicks very early in the spring, so people are used to getting chicks early. By the time a pullet is about 20 weeks it will be getting ready to start laying eggs.
When the weather is cold during winter many breeds will stop laying. Some do not stop especially those who have just started.

Chicks which are born during late summer will not mature until springtime and will start laying then. In areas where the summers are extremely HOT hens can stop laying due to the stress of the extreme heat. Think of wild birds which live outside in the freezing cold. Chickens do better in cold weather if it is not too severe therefor there should be no problem raising chicks during winter months in most areas of AZ.
