Arizona Chickens

redrocketrooster, sorry to hear about the HOA crackdown.

Well, I noticed this morning one of my silkie/Polish mixes has wry neck. Poor thing. I'm going to start the treatment recommended on here. Polyvisol, selenium, and vitamin e. If she doesn't show improvement by this weekend, I'll cull her. I just noticed it happening today, and it seems like a horrible thing to have to treat long term. I'm also going to cull the rooster--he's still not crowing he's getting a tad aggressive and he's mounting my pullets.

eta: read more about wry neck and it's causes. My guess is that the rooster did some damage to the poor girl's fragile skull trying to mount her.

So I'm picking up some day old chicks tonight (so excited!) and I was just reading a thread about wet and dry pox. Do I need to vaccinate for that here? I'm only getting six chicks but the bottles I've seen are for 1,000 doses. Also, should I vaccinate for Mareks as well? Anything else and where's the best place to get meds? finally, how on earth do you give a shot to a chicken??? Many thanks for your shared knowledge!

Well some of the April hatched pullets are laying, this pic is not quite the right color, but close Not sure who's laying yet, but several girls are for sale; sisters to the ones City Farms got. The tan egg is probably from one of the two single combed girls in the batch. These girls are EExEE, EExWelsummer and EExWelsummer/leghorn cross. PM me for details if you are interested.
Oh they are beautiful. The eggs & the girls I got from you.. I love their beards.. Thank you for making the trip..

Everyone will have a different opinion on vaccinating. I try to stay as organic as possible and I don't vaccinate at all.

If you are going to feed medicated feed, you do not want to vaccinate for coccidiosis. The theory goes that the two medications interact badly and effectively negate each other. Also, you'll want to confirm with the source of your chicks about their vaccinations. Many of the feed stores and local suppliers I called always vaccinate them prior to selling, so it may already be done. Personally, I have not heard of anyone vaccinating for either pox, but they have medications for absolutely anything! It appears that the main diseases are experienced primarily in the more humid and wetter areas, where the chickens will be kept enclosed far more than we do out here in Arizona. I have no proof of that, just a general observation from my reading here this last year.

I do not medicate or vaccinate for anything. In my opinion, prevention is the single best cure, so make sure your chicks are healthy from day one. Giving them fermented feed, which can be started on day one, immediately starts developing a healthy digestive and immune system. It will head off quite a few diseases. That is where I would start. Like Becky, I try to stay as organic and natural as possible. The same rules go for my family, though, too.

So...if my rooster is mounting my not yet laying pullet and she's letting him...does that mean she's going to by laying eggs soon? Google-fu says yes. Any real-life truth to that?

Hi all. Haven't checked in with the AZ group for a bit. My girls are 18 weeks so I'm hoping for eggs soon. My Welly and BSL look like they're getting close with nice red combs. My EE's comb just started getting a tiny bit red and my Production RIR is well.... still wayyy behind everyone else. K now I'm going to overload you with pictures.

Eleanor (EE) Family portrait which ended up looking like a picture of Ely and a triple photobomb from the rest of the girls. You can see the welly and bsl on the ground behind her with their nice red combs.

Monsoon has been an extra special time for the chickens. Not only are the temperatures much nicer the rain and winds have littered our backyard with palm tree seeds which enticed the girls to start exploring past the grass line. I was less than happy about this. I didn't want them near the pool even though I'm home and work right next to a window looking out at it and would see them if one fell in, but I also didn't want them pooping all over the patio. The cecal poop is such a nightmare. So today I spent a chunk of time building a makeshift baby gate from old trellises and zip ties. It opens and closes. It is low but none of my girls are very good fliers so hopefully they're too lazy to actually put forth the effort to get over it. We'll see. It's a temporary solution may have to come up with something else.

Hope everyone is doing good in their part of AZ. I'm getting the chick itch so I'm starting to plan out my list of breeds to beg for for X-mas. Take care.
