The feed stores don't vaccinate; hatcheries may. Some vaccinate automatically, and for some you pay extra. And of course, the question is what they vaccinate for? Mareks is probably more common than coccidiosis, but I am not certain as I don;t purchase from hatcheries.

Some people vaccinate for pox (wet or dry is not a different virus, but rather what part of the bird is infected), some don't.

redrocketrooster, sorry to hear about the HOA crackdown.

Well, I noticed this morning one of my silkie/Polish mixes has wry neck. Poor thing. I'm going to start the treatment recommended on here. Polyvisol, selenium, and vitamin e. If she doesn't show improvement by this weekend, I'll cull her. I just noticed it happening today, and it seems like a horrible thing to have to treat long term. I'm also going to cull the rooster--he's still not crowing he's getting a tad aggressive and he's mounting my pullets.

eta: read more about wry neck and it's causes. My guess is that the rooster did some damage to the poor girl's fragile skull trying to mount her.

Gatorade or pedialyte can also be helpful. Heat stress can cause wry neck symptoms, or at least make them worse. Complete reversal often takes weeks, not a few days. Put the bird in a cage by itself, add the vitamins to the water/gatorade, and it is actually quite easy to deal with.

Happy "almost" Fall, y'all...
A few photos to share....12 week old standard bred Buff Orp pullet and 11 week old standard bred Buff Rock...not often one gets to see these breeds next to each other...can't help but 'play' compare and contrast....enjoying BOTH.

Same Buff Orp in the next 2 photos.

Some Vaccines are oral or nasal, I had getting a shot of something for one of my bids (Budgey), I remember mostly a short, thin needle just under the skin in the wing, really it was so long ago I do not remember much else, except it was an English Budgey, they were expensive and hard to get back then.

cbnovick, twinklin, beautiful birds. cbnovick, the coloring of the buffs is gorgeous. twinklin, you have a great yard!

I must have jumped the gun on the wry neck diagnosis. I bought $40 worth of vitamins and supplements after work and the bird was fine when I got home. Such a huge relief. Sonoran Silkies, I don't think it was heat stress, as her symptoms showed up yesterday morning--nice and cool. I don't know what was going on yesterday--she was twisting her neck along her back so awkwardly and frequently. Maybe she had a weird itch? I watched her for 15-30 minutes last night and didn't see a twitch or twist for her, and again, nothing this morning.

It was actually a bit chilly this morning! I love it! I'm already having to run 1/2 of my morning runs with a headlamp since it's so dark. The change always seems to happen so fast. One morning the sun is blazing and burning the next morning it's chilly and dark.

Oh, I forgot to mention, I watched an amazing video/documentary last night. My Life as a Turkey. Highly recommend. It's available through Netflix.

Well done stained or dyed concrete floors are fantastic. Much easier to clean than tile and when done well they look great. The best looking concrete floors are the ones that were initially poured to be a stained (or dyed) floor. I think the dyed ones turn out better, with the dye mixed into the wet concrete prior to pouring. But stain can work well if you know what you are doing. Practice the technique somewhere where it won't show, until you can reproduce the effect you want. Closet floors and storage rooms are good for that. Be forewarned: if you have cracks or tack holes in the existing floors they will show up - a lot - no matter how well you think you've patched them. The patches seem to take up the stain at a different rate from the original floor.

I've seen a lot of dyed, stamped concrete floors that are supposed to look like flagstone and just... don't. Fake flagstone can be really tacky looking. Stick with flat floors and don't try to make it look like something it isn't and you should be fine. If you don't like the results you can always go back later and pour a thin, dyed layer of concrete over it. Or tile it.

Disclaimer: I've used dye in wet concrete for a patio area but have never tried to refinish an existing slab with stain or dye. I do see a lot of houses as part of my work.

Good luck with the floor project! We will have to have another BYC potluck at your place when it is done, hint... hint...

Thanks! I think another BYC potluck is a great idea.

I've been wanting to watch this. Everyone who has seen it seems to love it. It never occurred to me that it would be on Netflix, I'll check it out this weekend.
