Arizona Chickens

Good idea.  I'm in. Would it be all of AZ or just the desert coops?  I always direct newbies to "my coop" pictures if they ask, but to have a bunch in one place especially suited to our warm weather would be great.

It is a great idea! Most coops are designed for cold weather so having a page of warm weather coops would be useful.

The photo below is the least fatty of the four roosters I processed today. It seems like there was fat at every possible crevice in their poor little bodies. When I talked to the guy who gave them to me, he said he was using Purina Layena pellets, so I don't think it should have been that way. Supposedly, his Mom has been over trying to spoil them like grandkids the last few weeks, but would they really put on this much fat that quick? I mean, this seems to me like a lifetime of lethargic, cooped up guys or way too much scratch.

After all was said and done, which took considerably more work with that much fat, they were a decent size. We'll cook two for each meal when the times comes, since my family of five eats like a family of eight. But for being free, I can't complain too much, right?!?

On a different note, I picked up another 20 pounds of bulk carrots to can today. They were 25c per pound at Food City or Pro's Ranch Market, so I ad-matched them at Target. So, after buying the jars and the carrots, the price was still less than buying the same amount in cans! I have seven quarts coming out of the canner tonight and another batch tomorrow afternoon. It's been an excellent month for canning and stocking up! It's just time consuming. Thank goodness my bacon will all be going to the freezer, except maybe trying to pressure can a single pound to see how it turns out.

My wine is looking better and better every day. I picked up the bottles for that this weekend, too. Oh, the excitement of making my own stuff.

Hey Demo, them thar rooster wern't exactly free now were they ???? Hey hey you did need to do some work so there boy !

And BYW where are them thar picures ya promised ?????

All this talk of co-op remindes me that although my flock has a big roof to protect them, I need to make their home more winter proof. They live in a 30 X 12 foot sun porch with screens only for the windows. And the night temperatures are already 28 to 32. Actually they are used to being cold but the wind might be too much.

So sorry that I mised out on the poultry. Can you take and post some pictures so those of us who can not see the poultry will have some idea ? Please ?

As promised, here are some photos for you all from the State Fair. I'll post more tomorrow, since it's time for bed. Perhaps I'm biased, but I think my three Black Copper Marans and three New Hampshires top all of the others that were there. I might have to look in to showing them next year. That would be kind of exciting!

Oh my gosh! Thanks for sharing Demo! This brings me back to my days in 4-H and showing at the local park. I never associated the two of wanting chickens for eggs at 50 years old (but dreaming about them for nearly 15 years) and raising chickens for show and egg production when I was 10-14 years old. We are making a trek to the State Fair next year for sure!

City farm,

I have another unit similar to the one in the first pic, minus the tape recorder. It's been wrapped in blankets and completely dry. I gave it to a friend several years ago, and he gave it back in exchange for another retro unit that I had. It looks really cool in the dark, with the receiver being lit with dark blue lighting. Sorta looks like a dashboard or cockpit.

The only issue I have with that cabinet styling is that those rungs/legs underneath break or come loose, so I'll have to re-brace them. There was a cold solder joint on the circuit board, but that's been fixed. The record changer worked well and has a new needle, but I should check that again since it hasn't been used in awhile. If you're interested in some vintage stuff you can email me privately at [email protected], rather than cluttering up our beloved chicken board. I may have some Kenwood/Pioneers/Sherwood receivers in Bedroom #4 and some Wharfdale/Yamaha Electro-statics/Realistics/Advents (I'm keeping the Bose 901's) stached in Bedroom #3. This is just stuff that I picked up at thrift stores or was given to me over the years, and they all need some work done on them (hence, my hobby), but haven't gotten around to them yet.

Some folks like the console "all-in-one" setup, while others choose to go the separate, component route. Choose your poison.

Folks, I apologize for all the off-topic pics. --BB

P.S.: On a more related note for you coop and cabinet builders, get one of those Kreg drill thingies. I don't have it in front of me, but it's no bigger than a miter (sp) box, and you place your wood piece in it and you drill holes in it at an angle to attach to another piece at a 90 degree angle. The joint is so strong that you can stand on it. I've built several book cases and they are not rickety when you put your weight on them. It's adjustable for different screw lengths and it eliminates the need for using metal L-brackets for reinforcement.

I'm still waffling about buying one of those over-priced CConly coops 'cause they're so darn pretty, but since I know my way around wood reasonably well, I may come up with my own flavor, borrowing from everything I've seen. --BB

Bobby, look into building your own coop. We can get by with simple coops for our climate and you can probably build a beautiful one for much less than a cconly. It's just a matter of time and a little $.

Yesterday I was at work, stressing out about going through a 40lb bag of chick feed for the meaties already (they're 2 weeks old). Dumb moment. Went home and the bag is only 25lbs, and still 1/4 full. And I have a bucket full of fermented feed. So they are not going through insane amounts of food, whew! I didn't think I was feeding them that much.

Oh, LKD, nice egg! Love the speckles.

Be prepared. When I was growing out my 22 Java chicks there was a month or two when they were going through a 50 lb bag of feed every few days. It started when they hit about 3-4 weeks old. I thought I was going to go bankrupt. Mine are dual purpose birds so I started culling cockerels and that helped, plus they eventually slowed down their consumption. Raising chicks is not cheap. Especially with today's feed prices.

Good luck!

Is it crazy how much I love my chicks? I'm taking a mad amount of photos of them. FB friends will probably block my feed soon...
Here's my dog guarding her flock.
