Arizona Chickens

Hmmm,
I thought I posted but I don't see my post now so I'll try again.

Well, we did it. Our ailing leghorn(my husband's favorite) died a couple of days ago. I wanted to know what was wrong so we attempted our first autopsy. We only had a few minutes so couldn't do much more than open her up, but we did it. It was hard and stinky but I'm glad we did. Hopefully, in the future we'll be able to spend more time and do a better job.
We didn't know exactly what to look for, but the most striking thing was all the little white things everywhere. If anyone wants to look at the very gross pictures

you can follow the link below.
If you know anything about chicken autopsies/necropsies, please take a look and tell me what you think.

I am just curious as to how you know they are roos already at only 8 weeks. Sorry, fairly new to the chicken world. Mine are 5 weeks and I am keeping my fingers crossed that I have all girls.

We use a flood light at night to seed the lawn.. When the wild birds are sleeping they have "literally" NO IDEA that the seed is even there..

Been doing that for 4-5 years now.. It totally works.. Problem solved..

ooo great idea, we have 2 flood lights right on the corner of the back of the house where the grass is. I think if we position them at the grass they shouldn't disturb the neighbor if we leave them on. The chickens have been enjoying the grass seed feast all morning but no wild birds so far this year :).

Be careful, if you are going to let your birds eat the seed, that it isn't treated with fungicides, etc.  The seed at HD is coated.  I got ours at A&P Nursery specifically because it isn't coated with anything.

Oh yes you are completely right.. We have decided to not let the chickens out front any more.. We will put the dogs in a kennel
while they are out back.. No grass seed in the back this year. If we did seed we would let the flock out 2 months after planting
the rye..
What color is untreated seed?

I just over seeded this morning and covered with a truckload of composting manure for extra measure. I still need another truckload to finish the yard though. My clan is NOT happy about being locked on the side of the house.

I did find out, though, that rabbits will eat the seeds like a fat man at a buffet. I found the doe in the bucket of seed and then in the spreader!

I'm really looking forward to seeing this pasture blend grow in, though. I'm ordering comfry in March to plant under my oleanders and starting my Moringa seedlings this week, too. I just read the second book from the Urban Rabbit Project and it has great ideas that can be used for chickens, too.

So much to learn and do, but so little property!

Oooohhh.. Comfry.. Great idea.. I did read what Pipeman said.. Hummm..:idunno
Please keep us posted.. I think we will be ordering some moringa seeds...

off-white - tan

Glad to hear that, Tim! I maxed out the measurement setting on my spreader and covered the entire yard twice. I still have about half of my seed left, so I hope it comes in great! I was debating on going over it another two times or not, so I guess I'll wait and see. About six months ago, I mucked out a huge truckload from the stalls of a lady in Cave Creek or thereabouts. It's been composting on the side of the house since. Periodically, I've added some to the garden beds, but I had to move it all in order to fit the totalled truck in the side yard. It all went in to the raised garden beds for my wife. She turned it all over this afternoon while I finished spreading the new manure across the yard. It's a beautifully composted soil now, looking and smelling great! All it cost was some gas and manual labor. I really need to find out where to put my next batch for composting and get another truckload going for spring!
Awesome!! :woot

Basil could be a pullet..... I am going to wait before going to Craig's List. His behavior is very Alpha and he stance is so erect. Angle I have more hope for being a pullet. I do not have nice neighbors, that is my fear. I cond wait until 12 weeks. The pullet, PBR, I wanted 1 Minorcas, she turned out to be a PBR, that is what I thought it was. I questioned the lady, she went and got a second opinion. Therefor I will have 3 PBRs and I wanted only 2. I realize I will have to get 2 more at the same time, hopefully over 4 weeks old so they can blend in with my new girls. Or I may just wait until Feb. And get two more chicks for the brooder, and introduce them when they are old enough. I will see if there is a trade in the next couple of weeks.
