Arizona Chickens

Happy Thanksgiving to you all as well!

Question... Is it wrong to barbeque a turkey in the back yard while all the chickens, guineas, ducks geese and turkeys are roaming about?

Absolutely not! In fact, my turkeys always did their best to help me at the grill by eliminating the amount of meat that was cooking. And then there was the Barred Rock that attempted to commit suicide when she jumped on the hot grill. Fortunately, that is a self correcting action and she tends to stay far away from the grill if I'm near it. I offered to assist her towards her goal, but I don't think she's come to terms with it yet. Call me Dr. Henvorkian...

So just be cautious if you aren't use to them being around the grill. You never know what they'll do.

Oh, I forgot, I went out this morning and found a mama hen wandering through the front yard with her 8 new babies I didn't know she had been sitting on.

Yay! That would be such an awesome thing to see. I know how much of a pleasant surprise it was to go out and find the litter of rabbits in the chickens' nesting box. It's better than Christmas morning as a kid!

Are there any roosters that are not loud? I would like to get one but where I live they would need to be super quite.
Not to be insensitive..... I don't know of any rooster that is quiet other than a dead one.

Or one that has been de-crowed. I know nothing about how they do this, but it seems like when someone gets a dogs bark altered.

I don't know how quiet they become or how much it costs. Seems extreme IMO.

Only if you don't give some to the chickens, don't know about guineas, ducks and geese want June bugs and other fat insects. As for meat, I never gave my geese and ducks any, but I would collect fat bugs. Put me down for the Tuscon trip. Even if I do not get any turkeys, I may be looking at a couple chicks. I tegu re every 4 to 6 mo young blood. just a reminder I have a young cockral that needs a home or the last day of his life is when he crows. I did not get a current picture today as I planed to. My mom collapsed, she is in the hospital and I am staying with her. Here is the last photo of him I posted earlier. He is a Marans.

Hi all, Been lurking on this thread for years now and just haven't had anything to say for a while. But now I do. I am doing the New Years Hatch again this year and am looking for some fertile eggs. Does anyone in the Phoenix Area have any interesting breeds that I can have/beg/buy? Still kind of undecided as to what route I want to go with this hatch but I have waited so long to decide that I need to get then semi local, Looking to get 60 eggs (I have a wine cooler incubator that has produced hundreds of chicks, most of which I give away). I have bread back to my own chickens so many times I am starting to get too many weak and birth defect chicks. So I am pressing reset on the whole flock and starting over. Going to harvest everything I have now in January. Having said that, does anyone have any ideas/available?

Oh no! Shuz Tzu! They are so bossy and think we are less then bright when we do not get what they are saying. Pit Bulls are special dogs. They can flower to be all they can be if they know where there place in the family. With such a family there is order to were everyone belongs, has to be or there is such a mess. I have never known a bad one with good people. Very loyal to family. You may like to look up on YouTub Sharkie the pit bull. Oh! Yes handsome family.
Ernie is 10 years old and is a medical alert dog.
Oh, Ernie is a doll. Look at that smooshy nose. I just love the look they have. Those big eyes and floppy ears. That is fantastic to have a medical alert dog of this breed. May I ask what his job is? What does he sense and alert for?

I agree with you about the pit bulls. All animals, if treated with respect, taught obedience and a have a compassionate, loving owner will thrive in life.

Pit bulls have such prejudice against them. The media produces this mass hysteria by reporting attacks by, typically, these dogs. Yes, there are problems with the breed. They are strong and instinct takes over as well as adrenaline.

What about the other breeds that bite and attack and hang off your clothing and snap and cause harm? Those dogs are not brought to the publics attention. It's not a "big" enough "story". These other dogs I speak of are the small breeds, no offense, but I know the dog owners of these little bruts know who I am talking about. But their size doesn't do the damage a large animal can. That's the only difference, IMO.

German Shepherds are another breed that has these same issues. They are taught to attack humans. I was bitten and attacked by a German Shepherd when I was a toddler. My mom said I was watching a neighbor kid fix a bike and his dog attacked. Unprovoked. But they are categorized as family dogs. Guard dogs too. So if they can be trusted family dogs, why not pit bulls. In the disgusting world of dog fighting, it is dog against dog. It is cruel and awful and beyond my comprehension why people enjoy this grotesque form of animal cruelty. I guess what my point would be is that a mean dog comes from a mean owner.....
Any dog can be taught to be aggressive and attack!

It's not necessarily the breed that creates this, as in the case with our pit bull Joe. But, never did I fear for my safety or the safety of anyone else that came to our residence. He was a very loyal loving dog that dug for rocks and chewed them, that had a one track mind at times and fought over "territory". He did not go after people. It is a dog behavior that has to be remedied. We didn't do a good job of this. We failed him. At the end, I was fearful that my grandson or my son or his friends could become tangled in a dog fight just by being/playing in the yard. Yes, pit bulls were created to fight and hunt, due to their build/strength, stamina and jaw strength. They don't kill people on purpose. (Generally speaking. I am sure there are cases where something bad really happened to the dog that struck out against a child or adult. But I do believe that the human still causes this, either by promoting this kind of behavior or not finding the remedy to what is causing it).

A family friend was attacked and disfigured by her pet black lab. She takes responsibility for why the dog bit her face. I don't know all of the details..She has been through multiple surgeries. She did not have the dog euthanized. He wasn't mean or aggressive. It was an accidental, tragic mistake. So maybe the popular black lab should have some prejudice. Their bite is damaging. He was bred to retrieve dead birds for hunters. Instinct, adrenaline and determination and are involved.

My son, at age of 11, was attacked by our neighbors Rottweiler. The male dog jumped on him as he went to hug a family friend goodbye. His claw tore through my sons face at bottom area of his nose into his mouth. As my son turned to run away, the dog jumped at him and bit down on his buttock, piercing through his clothes and clamping down. This was a terrible ordeal. Do I blame the dog or the breed. No, I blame our friends for thinking they had socialized their dogs enough. These dogs were kenneled most of the time, not allowed to bond with the family inside the home and not around many different people. That dog was protecting his owner thinking that's what he was supposed to do. We would never have asked them to euthanize their dogs. They chose to turn the male and the female, that had no part of the attack, over to the county. They couldn't bear the thought of this happening to anyone else. Now, I grew up with a black lab, a doberman and 2 rottweilers. My parents had 5 more rottweilers after I left home. Never did one of them harm a person. Am I scared of the breed after this? Absolutely not. Is my son scared of the breed? Absolutely not.

I have watched The Dog Whisperer, Cesar Milan. I love what this man can do for families. It is just like a horse owner. The animals aren't the ones that are bad, mean, aggressive, territorial or make the mistakes, all on their own. It is the people, the owners that create the problems.

I couldn't imagine my life without a dog. I would have so many more if I could. My 6 pack seems to do me fine....until I come across another one that needs a loving home. It takes a lot for me to turn them down. I hope many more people open their hearts and their homes to the many orphaned animals that need loving families. The issues that many of them may have can be cured. It just takes time, patience and follow through.

I went to my post office and my Suki loves to go for car rides. When she hears the keys she's at the front door. She was sitting in the front seat with the windows down halfway. A young child said to her mommy, oh look a the cute dog. Mommy said, oh that is so...an as she looked at where her daughter was looking she made that comment of "oh no. you can't go near that dog sweetie". The poor pit bull....Those of us that are lucky to call them a family member know what they are really all about. Before I took in Joe, I had never thought to own one. I was prejudiced just like the next person....but once you get to know the breed...you are smitten. That is why we have taken in 3 more. If I ever thought they were what the media makes them out to be, I would never own one.

IMO folks.....this is just my opinion.

I am on your side of town. I also have a contact in Whitman that sells eggs for pretty "cheep"
big_smile.png
She has some barnyard crosses. I will message her and see what she could have available.

Padillas Peeps is another source for fertile eggs, in Goodyear. She is off of Sarival and Yuma. There is website under the same name, too.

I sell mine for eating unless I hatch some for fertility check.

I have a blue Salmon Faverolles Roo-my avatar, 1 Salmon Faverolle hen, 2 Cuckoo Marans hens, 2 EE hens, 3 bantam Cochin Roos, 1 blue laced red Wyandotte hen, 1 Golden Laced Wyandotte hen and 1 pullet, 1 New Hampshire hen, 1 mottled Houdan hen, 1 blue orpington pullet, 1 blue Ameraucana pullet, just started breeding Lavender Orpington cockerel as well as my flocks mixed breed. I only have a few 2nd generation from this flock. I have only seen one pullet breeding. I have hatched out some beautiful birds form this flock. I wouldn't have a huge number available due to the slow down in laying. Some of my pullets are not breeding, just began laying at end of summer. Roos are not as active either at this time of year. I couldn't guarantee fertility. Though I have recently hatched eggs from my flock last week and this week. This time of year is an odd time for this due to the decrease in most flocks production. Unless you buy from someone that has a lot of Roos.

I have available: a beautiful blue Salmon Faverolle cockerel and a blue Salmon Faverolle cross/ blrwyandotte(I think. That's what he looks like). I also have 4 bantam Salmon Faverolle/bantam cochin cross cockerels.

I am working on other breeds but they are all too young or in development. They won't be available until summer.

I've heard of people buying fertile eggs at Trader Joe's and incubating with some hatching. But they are production crosses I think.

Fox Fowl Farms
Thank you for checking your sources and will be watching to see what she says. I am hoping for some eggs layed no sooner than the weekend of the 7-8th of December. Past experience has taught me I get a better hatch rate with eggs set within 4 to 5 days of laying as long as they are rotated twice daily prior to setting. I also try to avoid bantam chickens cause they tend to take a real beating in a mixed flock. I lost a few beautiful White Silkie hens to my SLW Rooster who just seamed to crush them trying to mate them. I will probably have to get from multiple sources because few people can provide that many eggs in a two day time frame. I live in Tonopah but I work across from Sky Harbor Airport so driving between here and there is no problem. I just have to coordinate ahead of time for meet up or whatever it takes. I have thought of doing the Trader Joes experiment but have always been able to get plenty through this forum. Any and all help is appreciated.

Well, I'm a day late in wishing every one a Happy Thanksgiving, but that's the story of my life.

All my chickens are doing fine, now that I told ALL the neighbors that any dog found on my property would be shot. Some didn't believe me, but one dog did wander onto the yard, I called the Animal Control, and they sent a truck out to haul the still live dog away. The person driving the truck was extremely grateful for the eggs I gave him, and it took the owner a couple of days to locate their dog, and yeah, I admitted to calling the Animal Control. The word spread quickly, and now there are a lot fewer loose dogs running around.

I finally made a sign for myself, though I doubt I will leave it up long. It may invite someone less honest than myself to keep watch on the property waiting until I leave to either walk in and help themselves to a chicken, or worse still to remove the sign, though I doubt it could ever hang anywhere other than on my gate, it IS sort of "personalized."

I think if you click on the picture (either one) it will blow it up to a larger size, I was trying to make the meanest chicken face I could for this sign, I hope I got it right.

Last night for dinner, instead of cooking for just the two of us, we went out to eat, and had a wonderful meal at Golden Corral. In talking to the server we asked why it was so quiet there, we had been expecting a much bigger crowd, she told us that the large crowd had been that afternoon and they had planned on closing at 4:00, WOW !!! We didn't even leave home until after 4:00 to get there, so we were very thankful for them staying open to feed everyone that got there. When we left (around 5:30 or so) people were still coming in.

I went to bed feeling VERY stuffed last night, and today I am more than ready to get back to work. Black Friday and things should be rather hectic today, we'll see.

Anyway, I hope every one's Thanksgiving was a wonderful as our's was, and next year I AM going to have turkeys, both to eat and to sell.
