mirasmom, I have 30 or 40 roos you can choose from as well, but you'll have to guess what they are. I think I still have pure (hatchery stock) barred rock, naked neck, black cochins, Rhode Island Reds, silkies, bantam frizzle cochins, and probably a few more, and then a bunch of barnyard mixes. Rent is free if you pick up and drop off in Wittmann.

Nuclear, I have eggs if you want as well, but they are all mutts. I don't have my breeding pens built yet. Someday....

. This is good to know. I got mine on EBay. You never know who you are buying from, not knowing. I would love to have a nice Marans layer. When you cull let me know. A non-breeder, just laying. It is also good to get it straight, USA Marans have feathers on their legs. I am not up on the desired standards of what is being worked for in the new color variations. The pictures of the Lemon Cuckoo show yellow clean legs, they have a long ways to go to get feather and darker legs. I agree about breeding for a goal. There is nothing wrong with barnyard mix. I am not, at this time set up for standards. If/when I can have Roos I will be looking for standards.

Your lemon rooster will work for me to add barring. I do not like yellow skin and feet. However if I only hatch out my blue eggs, then it will more easy to eliminate yellow. Because my blue eggs layers have melenotic gene for their skin and feet and any chick that has yellow on the bottom of the feet will be clled from breeding stock. When breeding, ya gota know something about genetics even if you are not interested in SOP.

And for backyard pets and layer flocks mutts and non standard birds are just fine! Many of them lay well, are pretty to look at and taste like chicken

I just get annoyed when people are selling non standard birds and passing them off as the real deal to unsuspecting newbys.

Well Maryhysong, I agree with your statement but after having been around for too long you can practice "Let the Buyer Beware". Even in the Health Care Industry one needs to go to the internet and become informed. Learn, read, learn and read some more. I am amazed at how much money people are spending on chickens. Importing them form Europe and other such places. It seems that the Chicken World is becoming much like those who raise canines, racing horses and more. I guess being a "salt of the earth type" I believe utilitarian goals are important and leave competition to those who have more money than they know what to do with it !

Thanks. I will get back to you later this week. I have had offers of eggs from a couple other members too, so I will be doing a mixed hatch. I have gotten eggs from you in the past and got some good results. I think some of the ones I am harvesting in January came from eggs from you. Also you are local to me and are a good source to mix in to hedge against the ones I will be receiving through the mail. Be interested to see how those go being shipped this time of the year with the weather they will be traveling through.

to me, that sounds like a good starting flock. I have a production red, a RIR, and a Plymouth Rock also. My rock is gigantic, I got her and the production red from Desertmarcy. I am very happy with them.

Hi folks, we just returned from a 4 day trip to Bullhead City where we spent the holiday with my family. I wish I could say it was fun, but my DH made it very difficult as always. I am struggling to keep it together in my marriage & may just pack up & ship out! I loved seeing my family & would enjoy living closer to them. I've been with my hubby for 16 years....since I was a sophomore in high school & he was a senior. I just feel we have grown into such different people & we fight over stupid stuff to much. The spark is gone & past mistakes never seem to fade! This amongst MANY issues not appropriate for this thread is what has me broken down. Is there anyone out there going through life one day at a time in a marriage void of love? I stay for my kids...because of my vow....but what about my spirit? If I left I would not only hurt my kids, but....what about my chickens!! Lol

I'm gonna be planting some sod for a grazing area for chickens and turkeys and I was wondering if there is a certain variety that would be better for them. I know most of the varieties we can grow here are a bermuda blend but didn't know if one would be better. This will be strictly for birds, won't be for us to play on.

HA,  well ok that answers the question.   I am not a fan of altering animals unless necisary so I would not be ok with de-crowing a bird.  

I don't supose if I wanted chicks I could rent a roo or something?

De-crowing carries a high mortality rate. We have two roosters. One is older than the other, so the younger doesn't crow much. And the older isn't a crower either. He does the sun up crowing, but we put him in a "rooster condo" at night in the garage so he doesn't bother the neighbors. It's extra work, but we really do like him and he's a VERY nice rooster, both to people and the hens.
