Sorry I missed the beginning of this discussion. Are these prices/birds from GFF? I know it is expensive to import birds, but really....those prices are ridiculous and day-old chicks: do they come with a guarantee of survival past the first month?? Probably not. And we all know there is a certain % mortality in baby chicks. Perhaps the buyers want status symbol. In my view, there are plenty of breeds right here in the U.S. in need of preservation and breeding up to the SOP. The big hatcheries have ruined a lot of breeds so you can't get good birds there. They must come from dedicated breeders.

Yes to an extent Buyer Beware. But still I believe in full disclosure and transparency. It does not cost a great deal to show unless you live a long ways from where the shows are at. Most shows in AZ are average 3 hrs from me. But I enjoy a lot of aspects of showing anything. I don't show to win. I show to get experienced opinions on my birds. The SOP, especially for the older, heritage breeds, was written in the days when chickens had to be productive because the farmer needed to make a living. When a chicken matches the SOP in it's body type and size then it will usually be a very good producing bird, whether it is an egg, meat or dual purpose breed. The SOP specifies certain aspects of type because those aspects are required for good production. And there are different body types required to fulfill different purposes. I too believe in utilitarian goals and the SOP is helping me achieve those because on many points they are one and the same.
That all depends on your budget. I have a friend in Willcox who would have loved to come up for the Tucson show, but their budget will not allow the gas cost to drive. And if you are staying overnight, motels/hotels add to the cost as well as gas. For me, I cannot go to a show more than a day trip or possibly one overnight because no one to feed the birds while I'm gone. DP could do it given written instructions. I don't feed to same to all the pens, so it is confusing to someone who is filling in. And then if you are entering a lot of birds, like I did last weekend, that does add up!

Anybody who doesn't process their own birds and is interested in some ready to cook whole organically grown chickens, PM me. I butchered 3 Rhode Island Reds yesterday, all dressed out at 4 lb 3 oz. And will be doing 2 gigantic Barred Rock cockerels tomorrow---those will dress out at over 6 lbs each, as well as a few younger Barred Rock cockerels which will be in the 4-5 lb range. I sell them for $5/pound processed weight. These are great slow cooked in an oven bag and even better if brined first.

Yes Marcy they are from Green Fire Farms. $100 for a day old chick non-sexed. Are you kidding me ! Somedays I hesitate to buy cheese because it is really a non-essential item for me just a treat.

yeah those birds are awesome looking, aren't they? But that price tag is a little steep. I wonder how long before they are within reach of the average chicken aficionado?
Yes they are stunning but seriously does the average chicken aficionado really need to have them. Five grand is a pretty nice vacation if you ask me.

We have 6, 10-14 day old chicks if someone would like..
Rooster is a partarage silkie mix
Hen is a E.E.
How tempting ! Mutts just my thing ! and I am going to be in the valley so I'll see if I can find my way over there if you send PM with address. Wednesday is the travel day

Hey all! Boy, it's been a while... I have news! I just bought three Red Rangers from a friend of mine today. They are (hopefully) all pullets and are 5 weeks old. One of them lost an eye to a wire fence. Her name is Jackie (like the female pirate). There are two more, Bella, and Anna Marie. I will try to post pictures soon!

Wow...a black chicken! At first I thought it was fake...looks like a statue. My 13yo loves it.

While I was gone for the weekend, my neighbor took care of my birds. I told her to keep all the eggs, unless there was a tinted/cream. I'm only getting two per month of those and will be starting up the bator this week for my Christmas coop. I think this egg is from my favorite hen, a barred rock...and my roo is (likely) a Barnevelder. Does anyone know what the chick might look like? I'm hoping for barred...
