Oh no! I'm missing one of my hens! I was in the back room of the house with the door open due to the lovely weather. My 8 20 week old pullets were free ranging on my 1/2 acre blocked wall yard. When I went to go close up their coop (as I do every night after they put themselves in) I noticed my barred rock, Dolly, was missing. I searched the yard and all my trees for over 2 hours and couldn't find her. I would think if something got her I would have heard a commotion from the others or see feathers strawn about...but nothing, she's just gone. She was my favorite and I'm just hoping that she may turn up in the morning although I know the odds aren't great.
Such a disappointing night? What could have happened to her?
Off topic but thought those garden folks may be able to help. We recently purchased a house in Mesa (as-is sale, so unable to ask previous owner), and there is a deciduous tree, still small at only 5 ft tall but it has some bunches of flowers coming in with the new leaves....does anyone know what this tree may be?
I want to plant my potted fig tree there but hate to tear it out if it will be a fruiting tree.
Here are a few pictures of the tree, leaves and incoming flowers.![]()

Any one know? Thank you!!!
Don't stressed too much, yet. They are smart creatures and some like exploring. Right after I joined, someone had a Houdini Hen that kept getting to the other side of the fence.
I had one pullet get over my brick wall. We chased her down four houses before giving up. She showed up in my backyard wanting back in to the coop six hours later!
At first glance, pomegranate
Did your VERY sweet and kind friend tell you where she found those lovely towels? OMG...a must have!!!![]()

We had one disappear once. It turns out she got over the wall and then couldn't get back over. We searched the neighborhood and found her hiding under a bush. She was very happy to see us.![]()
Thanks!
I truly hope we find her in the yard in the morning. My hope is that she is roosting in one of the 8 large orange trees in the back yard and I wasn't able to find her in the dark...but I'm not holding my breath.
This is really making me think twice about letting them free range, even when I am within ear shot.
I hope you find her this morning! It's good that you didn't find piles of feathers, that makes it less likely that something took her (although a coyote once took one of my hens without the loss of a single feather). Like the others said, maybe she just found a different place to roost. A couple of my birds have done that when they were younger, both were lower ranking hens. They can also get themselves wedged into the tightest spaces and not get out. Look everywhere she could have squeezed into. Good luck with your morning search.Oh no! I'm missing one of my hens!
