Arizona Chickens

Hello Everyone!

I'm new to the world of chickens. I just wanted to stop in and introduce myself!

Notinoz: Eleanor is doing really well. She's nine months now, crawling all over the place and pulling up on everything. She's trying to say a few words, and has her Daddy wrapped around her little finger.

To whoever was asking about peach trees: Peach trees do very, very well in the Valley. I've got 2 full sized peach trees, a Florida Prince and a Desert Gold, and between the two of them I got at least 300 pounds of fruit last year. I also have a dwarf Bonanza that isn't yet in full production that got about 3 dozen peaches last year. All of these trees were planted 4 years ago. The big thing is to get a low chill variety, I also suggest buying from a nursery rather than a big box store, since the nursery is more likely to have stock that is acclimated to warmer temperatures. Unfortunately this really isn't the best time to plant peaches, the best time to plant them is January or February, so that they have time to get established before it gets too warm. Plums also do well here, as do figs, pomegranates, mulberries, a number of tropical fruits, almonds, pecans and citrus.

On the hard boiling fresh eggs front, the best method I've found is to steam them in a pressure cooker. 6 minutes, 6 pounds of pressure, natural release. The eggs come out great and the shells just slip off, even if the egg is so fresh that its still warm. I have one of the big pressure cooker/canners, so I put the eggs in a small metal collander that fits into the cooker.

Thanks to Petra, who delivered a whole bunch of roosters to me today! Some of them are pure bred, there is a black Ameraucana, a Black Copper Marans a Buttercup and a HUGE, gorgeous New Hampshire. I am going to process them tomorrow, but if anyone wants one of them for a flock husband AND can pick them up tomorrow or Monday, I can hold them. I absolutely cannot keep them more than a day or so, though.
