Arizona Chickens

LKD- Arizona now offers a D. License with VETERAN printed right on the front- You need to take your DD 214 to the MVD, fill out a form & you get your new license-It's really worth the $12 charge, as many places offer a military discount. Carl's Jr, H. Depot, etc. Good Luck!

This morning I watched a roadrunner snatch a fat lizard out of my front yard. Urk... forgot about THAT predator threat!

Roadrunners have been known to hang out at my pond, snatching house sparrows and finches that come in to drink. Looks like the chicks won't be going out on their own until they are much, much bigger. Assuming I can actually keep them in the grow-out pens... those little buggers are fast. And sneaky. And resourceful. Which are all great qualities for free-ranging heritage breed chickens, even if it does mean trouble for me.

Yes!  All but one.  I did have to bathe some of them (big pain in the tush) but all is well that ends well, huh?  The previous batch of 3-4 week old quail are gobbling up the sloppy mess in a wonderful manner.  They eat every crumb, wasting not a bit, and gobble it down so fast that I am sure even the runts will be ready to process in another 2-3 weeks.  Also, they are not needing water refills nearly so often.  I think this is a really successful experiment, although they are now growing so quickly I am going to have a cage space crisis soon.  Best get to building my new growout cage.

We are actively looking for a new (larger) house with a big backyard.  We should know soon if we can get a loan.  Meanwhile I am thinning out our possessions and saying goodbye to lots of stuff gathered with good intentions and too little time.

I'm not a hoarder by a long shot, but maybe a pack rat whose time to declutter and organize has come.

Not sure what you're looking for, but we're getting ready to list my Mom's house. 2600 square feet, I think on a 10,000 square foot lot. It's four bedrooms with an enclose porch that be a fifth bedroom. Two rooms are easily split to make it a six (seven?) bedroom. It has an RV gate with huge parking and a large workshop in the back. It's in a very chicken friendly city of Peoria with no HOA. Therecxs some fixing up to do, bit that's half the fun.

Message me if you're interested.

Moved the last of this year's chicks into the grow-out pen a few days ago. It was just in time. Yesterday I noticed the nearby ant colony has expanded into the brooder box (which is on the ground, outside). They were probably working on construction while the chicks were still in there. Sigh. I don't want to poison these particular ants because the horned lizards eat them. Looks like I will have to move that brooder before next breeding season.

Hello, everyone! New to the chicken and new to the site. Glad I found you guys. My only chicken experiences are when I was little and my grandma kept some chicken in a small coop but I always want some chickens for myself and had been waiting for years (due to city rules ect) and finally pulled the trigger.
Got two 3 months old off Craigslist, one black sexlink and one silver lace wyandotte. Lost the sexlink to the weed killer. I have done tons of research during the years but I obviously missed this one. Learned it hard way will never forget.

Then I build a coupe for the wyandotte. Took me about 3 days, and painted them ASU maroon (go devils!). Used decompsed granite as substrate, works like a charm! Not smelly at all and super easy to clean. Attached are two 14x14 nesting box.

Then added some chicks, 1 white leghorn 1 bared rock and 2 rhode island reds from Ace hardware in Gilbert, and 1 east egger, 1 black australorp, 1 black sexlink from pets club in Tempe. I didn't mean to keep this many chicken in the small coop, but people saying the survival rate for first chicken keeper are low.

Fortunately/unfortunately, I didn't lose any one of them. They all bigger and healthy as cow.
I gave away 2 little rhode island reds last week, tougher than I thought.....

After waiting waiting and waiting, today I got my first egg from wyandotte! So excited! Showing picture to all my friends!!! The egg is small but good shape and solid. It weights 40g(1.4ounce) only, I am sure tomorrow will be a bigger one.

I think the wyandotte sets a good model for the rest of the younger girls. She found the nesting box, didn't make a mess and she didn't even clark!!! Super quiet just did her business and walked out like nothing happened!

Glad to meet everybody, this is cool place to hang out. ciao~

Good to meet you. I have only been a chicken lover for about a year now. Learning by trial and error but everyone here is great about helpful tips. I have had my losses, but from predators. Mainly coyotes but need to watch for bird of prey too. I need to update my critter list. Where are you located? I'm in Surprise.

My neighbor across the street left her gate open and one of her dogs got out and came into MY yard and killed one of MY chickens.  I'm down to 5 now with 6 more 4 week old babies in the house. Gonna have to confine them to the back yard.  My chickens have never gone into any one else's yard and that's not fair. I don't have a problem keeping my dog contained so why can't other people do the same.  It's not that hard. I'm steaming mad and very upset because my Buffs are pets.  They come and sit in my lap and gather around me and talk to me and follow me everywhere.:somad :he :hit

Sorry about losing your girl.  Not only do we have to figure out a way to keep our chickens safe from wild predators-we also have to keep them safe from domestic ones, regardless if the owners are responsible OR NOT.  Yesterday, our neighbors dog walked right into our house right behind my husband who was carrying groceries leaving the front door ajar behind him.  Now that's comfortable!!  If she wasn't old and arthritic, it could have been a problem with our cat.

I used to have a neighbor with unknown number of cats.  For some reason, it seemed they ALL liked to use my little flower garden as their litter box.  When her ferret made its way to my back door, through a locked fenced yard with a dog - I finally had the nerve to have a neighborly conversation with her.

Hoping you are able to work it out peaceably. (for you :)

Kackinkelly, when we let our go out front, I had a baseball bat close by.. Along with one of our dogs. Either tied up or our phoebe, she never leaves the yard. I accidentally left her out all night. I went out to the toss the garbage and here she comes trotting up with her precious little face. She is a Shetland sheep dog.. Shelty.. The best well behaved dog, except when she eats our garden treats..

About the cats, we have asked our neighbors that FEED the feral cats, to PLEASE clean up their poo! :sick

I wanted to share some of my new babies. I have mostly ameraucana in all the varieties except lavender and splash in my adults and a couple of crested and a RIR and an Ancona. I just got a couple of ameraucana/turken crosses. I am excited to see if they brown or colored eggs and if they will be broody hens or not. they are only 2 months and 4 months and some chicks so I have to be patient for awhile. we bought some more ameraucana's and some of the ameraucana/turkens and some more crested chicks for this year. I am looking to add a few silkies to be brood hens for me. I also added a couple of ducks for my kids. I am trying to figure out if this will be a hen or a cock so it does not have a name yet The ducks are Meatball (left) Plucky (middle) and Ducky moemoe (right) This is miss Fancy Pants The two buff wheatons are Goldielocks and chicken pocks (lol my son named them) a blue ameraucana meeting the ducklings
So adorable... Can not tell if your mix is a roo?? Just a newbie..
