Arizona Chickens

Okay, great advice on the Arbico fly control. I'll check out the company as soon as I log off of here. I will say, that hanging pouch thingy has been awesome so far. But, ugh, the smell is no bueno, and obviously if I can stop the cycle, all the better. hahaha, how many commas can I use in one sentence????

I think my EE is egg bound. Trying to lay with no result, fluffed up feathers, tail pointing down, moving slowly. BUT I can't feel an egg inside of her...palpitating, I probably won't do an internal probe. She is, of course, my favorite chicken. In reading the causes, I'm a bit at a loss. They have supplemental calcium, and are feed a layer feed, so I'm assuming it's not a calcium issue. I read something about too many treats and I have been throwing down extra sunflower and a non-corn scratch to fatten up the last of the CX, so perhaps that's the culprit? I haven't been home much to try anything to help her out, but have some time tomorrow to give her a warm bath and lube her vent. If she's still hanging in there.

I tried the hanging pouch thingy too and like you the smell was terrible even though it worked well at catching flies.
If you order the fly predators they will be shipped inside fly cocoons that will be ready to hatch. You must release them where your chickens cannot reach them or you will feeding your chickens some very expensive bugs!

Sorry about your EE. I hope you can help her.

New egg today! I assume from the same hen as yesterday's speckled egg. It's a bit bigger than the first one.

I didn't know RSLs laid eggs with speckles.

I buy my fly predators at Spalding Labs. They will set up a schedule for shipping them based on your needs and were cheaper than Arbico last I looked. I have been very happy with the company, good customer service. They even sent me some free predators one year after I complained I still had too many flies. I have close neighbors with multiple horses, and if they aren't controlling the flies over there, then their flies become my flies. I also had a horrible problem with the flies hanging out on the metal siding of my poultry house. Drove me nuts, flies on either side of the gate when I went in and out multiple times a day. Then I discovered that spraying the sides with permectrin II keeps the flies off! What a relief. I can't tell you how much time I have spent swatting flies with the fly swatter, leaving big ugly black smashed flies all over the metal siding. Now I don't have to do that. I will have to respray from time to time, but now I know what works. And plan to use it on the brick wall of my house come summer when they congregate there to keep cool. Easy to spray with a pump sprayer. I hate flies

So I was out doing some yard work this morning and I heard some strange noises coming from the coop that I've not heard before. There were two of my red sex links inside and since they were calm just noisy I left them be. A bit later I decided to check on them and found these on the floor of the coop between the feeder and wall. They are my first chicken eggs. My RSLs are 20 weeks old this week and I was prepared to wait a couple more weeks so it was a pleasant April Fool's gift from the girls. Now that a couple of the girls have started laying will they lay every day or do they usually work up for that? Also what is the best way to get them to use the nest boxes? It's funny since I just but a dummy egg in each nest box this morning a few hours before they laid. We'll see where they lay next time.
How eggciting.. :yesss: you did the right thing by putting the eggs in the nesting box's each breed lays at a different rate.. Yes, expect to have another egg today & tomorrow. They will get bigger and lighter in color as they lay..

Oh I have been a bad bad girl!! My hubby is going to kill me. I just bought 2 Buff Orpington, and 2 Coco Moran chicks, and yes I'm not done, I found buff ducks so I had to get 2 of them too for my drake. Now I hope they are all females. The chicks were all pullets but I don't know about the ducks babies. I found exactly what I wanted and I just couldn't help myself. LOL SHHHHHH don't tell Frank. We will just see if he notices...LOL

My kinda gal... You go girl... We only think about getting ducks.. I think our dogs would eat the eggs and so much more work..

The white rabbit that came from Demo',s place kindled last Sunday. She had four, and they are all doing well.
In other good news, the first mulberries are getting ripe, and are really delicious.

City Farm I bought 3 ducklings a couple of weeks ago from a feed store, they are hatchery choice. then I went to buy some year old silkie hens and he had ducklings. I bought 2 crested and 2 who knows what they are. I now have 7 ducklings and even though they require extra work I love to watch them play around.

. Chickens are so much fun and the ducks I think will be too. Of course I am hoping they are hens and not drakes. my boys have named them Meatball, Plucky, Ducky moe moe, quacky, marshmallow, bubbles, and fluffy. My son also named two of our chicks Goldie Locks and Chicken Pocks. he likes the unusual names I guess. lol.

These are the first three we bought.

I had gotten 2 magpie ducks because I couldn't find the buffs. I just couldn't pass them up when I saw them. So that gives me a total of 5 ducks. My dog loves the eggs. So do I for that matter. They free range too but I have a pond for them. Now I just need my drake to remember he is a duck. He has been hanging with the chickens since the coyote got his mate. They are all so darn cute. :jumpy

I want to try some meat birds, 2 or 3 so I don't want to order online, anywhere I can get some cx local?
