Arizona Chickens

So we've had quite the adventure today. I came home yesterday and Our very sweet Boss Hogg had lost her voice. I couldn't find anything helpful on the forums about it. Seems it's happened to a few people but since she wasn't symptomatic in any other way, it was a mystery. I think I went into hyper-chondria this morning because I swore she was walking funny and I got really worried. My friend, who is a nearby vet and also has chickens, said to bring her in and she'd watch her until she could get in with Dr. Funk. She let Boss Hogg hang out in the treatment area and she was very popular there this morning (pecked a cat though). Btw, Dr. Funk is at Mesa VCA and works with a lot of chickens if anyone ever needs a vet. It's on Country Club and 8th.

Turns out it's chicken laryngitis probably due to a mild bacterial infection, so she's on antibiotics for the next 5-6 days. He said she's otherwise very healthy, no parasites or anything like that. But she had quite the day, I think she enjoyed her day out.

I hope she feels better soon. Birds seem to heal faster than a lot of other creatures.
I love Dr. Funk. He's taken care of some of my non-mainstream pets.
My girls were panting but I go out mid day and check water and spray down the pens. We use nipple waters in my big coop but when it gets hot I add some pans of water for them to lay in. They love it when I spray the pen down. They play in the dirt and scratch all around. Love to make them happy.
Do they actually lay down in the water?

One of my pullets didn't go in to roost with everyone tonight else and instead was out in the run. When I finally saw her walking away from where she was I found this shell-less egg!

I'm pretty sure it was her egg since I had just been in the run cleaning before they rest of the girls went in to roost and the egg wasn't there. It's her first egg, and she must not have known what was happening or what to do about it the way she was just hanging out in the run. I'm hoping the rest of her eggs come out normal! This one looks like a water balloon.

ok, I have a very nonchicken question, but do not know any other group go propel.........

I want to get a 12 gage, hunting shotgun. From an early experience I wanted a WEATHERBE PA-08

sometimes yes. They more like sit a moment and then run out of it. some stand in it. others get on the edge of the pan and teeter there while trying to grab a drink without anyone getting them wet. lol.

LKD-_Hubby says-It's an expensive gun, -cheaper ones would do the same, but it should do everything you stated.

So an update on Boss Hogg. She got two doses of antibiotics yesterday and one this morning. She definitely doesn't like me holding her mouth open, but she's been pretty good about it. But she's already gotten her voice back, so the drugs seemed to have kicked in pretty quick. She never stopped laying in all of this either. But she seems like she's got a little more pep in her step too. She's our favorite, so I'm just really happy that it was nothing major and seems quickly curable.

I have re-homed 2 of my girls, and my yard looks more empty. I miss little Tina my Leg Horn, I spent so much time just looking to see if she was still alive, and lessening for any commotion. She was so badly picked on. She could not sleep in the coop with the others, never layer her eggs in a nest box, when she tried to eat someone would chase her away, even if they were not eating. :(

 But I hear that she is now accepted into a group, eating and enjoying treats. This makes me so happy. She was so stressed by being so picked on. I bought chicken diapers for her, but they upset her, she just collapsed on the floor. So I had to return her to the outside. Even Black China, the little Silkie is no wares close to being picked on when she was first introduced as little Tina.

Tina and Deary have really settled in nicely. Every time I check on them, Tina is eating, drinking, just hanging with the other girls, sleeping in the house. In just 24 hours, Deary seems to have come to an understanding with Blackie, so very little aggressive behavior today. And she already gave us a nice brown egg!
