I was naive and went to the Maricopa county fair for the small stock auction on Friday thinking I would just bid on and actually win a few pullets or hens to bring home.  Boy was I shocked to see them go for well over $100 and some up to $500! So much fun to see those kids projects go for so much, but NO WAY am I paying $500 for a chicken! 

Anyway, I'm interested in buying a few of the "losers" who didn't make the grade for the auction. It seemed the kids really take good care of them, most of the hens at the fair were quite friendly. Anyone know how I would go about doing this? Do you contact the FFA leader? Someone at the fair mentioned just going there when they release the animals and talking to the kids outside the show barn.

Hello everyone we are downsizing our backyard flock. I have already sold some of our pullets, and re-homed our Splash Ameraucana cockerel. (Met some wonderfully nice people along the way too! <3 Always great to make new chicken friends. )
One of my Orloffs turned out to be a cockerel as well. I thought I would put him up on here too before I go to Craigslist, and see if anyone would be interested in giving him a home. He is free. We can deliver, if not too terribly far away from Tucson. We can also travel, and meet halfway somewhere! He is a nice guy, as I handle all my chickens frequently. (They get hugs whether they want them or not! ^^ Which is easy to do when you have a small flock. I tell them if they didn't want hugs they shouldn't be so cute!) He is a little over 4 months old.The photos in no way do his colors justice. They are VERY muted. My camera is old, and on its way out.

Make sure the chickens have lots of shade and fresh water. As Rufus stated, mist the run several times a day. I even keep ice blocks, frozen milk jugs, or 2 liter bottles to put in the hen house and coop for them. They'll stand on the ice block and peck at it. You'd be suprised how much they will cool the area. I also freeze 16 oz water bottles and make sure to keep them in their water during the day.

Restrict their scratch. It's a "hot feed" and increases their metabolism to digest, causing their bodies to heat up. I also keep lots of watermelon, canteloupe, grapes, etc around for them during the summer months.

With a little additional effort on your part, they'll make it through the heat just fine.

These are great tips. Friends have lost chickens to the summer heat. So sad. I'm about to get chickens, none yet, and all arizona advice is good as it starts to heat up.
Would they use a baby pool to cool off? Or do they not like to get wet?

As long as the water is not too deep. Mine don't like to get their feathers wet. You might have to show some of them that the water is safe to jump into.
