Arizona Chickens

Hi AZ chicken folks. I've had hens for years but just decided to incubate. I don't have a rooster. I'm curious where you keep the humidity in your incubator at? And my hens do well in the heat, they have shade from a massive eucalyptus tree and the sprinklers go off. But what about chicks? They're due to hatch next week, then in the brooder for I don't know how long, the heat outside will practically be where the brooder should be. And are they more sensitive? I plan on keeping them til they're laying and decide which to keep. I put all the channels in the incubator with water to get 40% humidity but haven't added water and the channels are dry I think but the humidity still remains at 40%. Maybe the eggs are putting off moisture? Its definitely not 40% in the house with the a/c running.

Wait, so you dont have a rooster, but you are incubating eggs from your hens????? Unless you didnt explain yourself as well as you thought you did, what result are you hoping for?
If you don't have a rooster, I hope you are incubating someone else's eggs as the rooster is kind of important

ISO New home:  Please don't think I'm one of those people who gets chicks & then does the "now what?"  We have loved them but I just don't have the energy (for medical reasons :sick ) to butcher them.  I've mentioned several times that maybe I will try to and the family throws up their arms because 1. they are pets and have names and 2. not something I should be doing.  I'd love to donate them to boy scouts, 4H, etc. or anyone who'd like them (even to butcher for the stew pot) but I'm not sure who to contact.

We have two barred rock that are just turning THREE years old :old .  Amazingly one is still laying.  They have been trained on the treadle feeder & nipple waterer.  They have been free-ranged and spoiled on organic greens in addition to the layer pellets.   They let me pet them & pick them up.  They have been very good with my kids too.
There is a farmers market at Northern and the 101 on Sat morning. Most of the time a school for the deaf are there with a betting Zoo. They may be an option for gental friendly chickens that re not laying, or still layin.

^^ wow that coop is beautiful! Mine is so sad looking, scrap wood nailed together and the run is a rusty pool fence I got free on Craigslist. But my hens are happy. Oh and no I didn't incubate their eggs! Lol. I bought 3 dozen so I'm really hoping for some healthy laying hens.

I was digging in the yard a couple days ago and I found this creature, buried in the ground. I emailed the pic to desertmarcy (who knows about herps) and she said it's a Western Blind Snake (Leptotyphlops humilis). She said, "they spend most of their time burrowing but can sometimes be found on the surface, especially after rains. They eat small insects like ants, larvae, and termites." ANTS!!! TERMITES!!!

How perfect is that? A snake you never see that eats ants and termites.

I found one of those about a year ago, behind my shed under a pile of folded tarps. Looked the same exact color although this one I found was about 3 times the size of the one you are holding. Cute lil bugger, I enjoy knowing he is making his residence here on my property. Especially now that I know they eat termites! Heck, I should stock up on them in that case.

I'm right there with you! I wonder if you can buy them. That would be amazing. Being a block from the open desert, ants and termites have been far more problematic than any of our other houses.
