Arizona Chickens

I came across a blog post from someone in the Phoenix area about keeping chickens cool in summer. I found the included photos very helpful.

(Won't it be funny if the person who wrote it is a regular here?!!)

Thanks for the link. Some good ideas there for sure. I saw the post (on here?) about using a shallow pan with bricks in it to absorb the water and the hens would get on the bricks to keep cool. I liked that idea. My chickens won't free range, so they will have to enjoy what I come up with for them in their enclosure. :)

These are all GREAT ideas. For my hens here in North Central AZ, temps in the morning of 50 rising to 110 in the pm can be huge problem as well. I totally agree with buckets for water and not waterers! When it gets over 100 i add ice cubes to the pails. I use Big Mouth paint pails, about 99 cents from Home Depot.
Watermelon is excellent. Cantaloupe is also very good. Chill either in the frig for a little while and let them have it.
Make sure they have plenty of dirt to fluff down in. It will be cooler. A old tent with the bottom cut out and windows cut open in the sides with a bag or two of sand (cleaned sand, not concrete sand) also gives them an escape from the sun. I usually dampen the sand and then let them dig down.

They also like to peck at block ice.

Testing and trying to post to the Arizona Chickens thread.  I've been to new member and to Where am I......still trying to get to the right spot.  LOL

Yay, I did it!!!  I have posted pics of my "chicken palace/gazebo" in the coop thread.

Nice to finally get to the right spot.

Those spoiled brats, their own gazebo!! I bet they are happy chickens... So glad you are on, what breeds do you have? :welcome

Things never seem to move right. I am going to be stuck in town for a few weeks. I need to be out of my house before the weekend of the 7th and 8th of June. My cleaners are coming in. I have medical stuff I need to stay in town for. I am going to need to find someplace to park here around town. Any one in the Witman or noth that has a space I can park? No idea how long. Hopefully only a few days. It is so frustrating. I had gone in 2 months ago, called them every week, they just got back to me. They, my doctors office sent in an order with my name misspelled with, Vonnita, not Bonnita, and my birth date 5/25/1925, not 5/21/1947. Apparently all my calling helped then in figuring things out, but! She said they have only had it for 2 weeks! In the end it dose not mater the story, what is, is and now I have to stay in town longer. It is usually a 6 to 8 week process. With a start date of next Monday.

Thanks. Sorry to have to ask. I will pay you for the incovenouse. I will have a few chicks.

Walmart parking lots are always free and lite up..Enjoy the process.. :yiipchick
