Arizona Chickens

Hello fellow Arizonans, I live in Tucson and are interested in adding some bantams to my flock but would prefer not to do mail order. Anyone know of a place locally I can purchase either chicks or pullets?

At the Pima County Fair, as is typical for poultry shows around here, there were more bantams shown than large fowl. There are a lot of good breeders of bantams plus a ton of different breeds of bantams. First you should decide what breed you want because "bantam" is not a breed, it is just a smaller version of a large fowl breed. Going to the shows is a good way to find out who has good birds. I don't keep bantams myself, but know people who do or could put you in touch with the right people. PM me and I'll give you a contact name and #. I always encourage people to buy from breeders and support the local breeders instead of the big commercial hatcheries.

I did a few batches and they ate it well enough.  Throughout the first winter and all of summer, I had more than ample grass in my yard, though, so I had no worries about fodder.  This last year, I tried to overseed with the chicken pasture blend from Grow Organic, rather than overseeding with Rye grass.  That was a bad idea.  As soon as I know I get to the keep the house in the divorce, I'm going to try planting the remaining pasture blend that I have and establish it prior to buying a new flock.  Since has such great weather for grass year round, fodder shouldn't really be necessary.  I figure if you have the time and money to invest in a system for fodder, you should just grow a good sized patch of grass.  The grass will give you far more benefits than the fodder will, including reducing the overall temperature of your backyard.

Where my chickens are I cannot put grass and mine do not free range so that is out. I also am raising livestock and have a large garden so they get a lot of vegetables and scraps. We throw black sunflower seeds to our flocks as well. I have not yet grown fodder but everything I have read it seems like it might be beneficial. I like K9Dave's idea of the pallet planting.

Yay, I did it!!! I have posted pics of my "chicken palace/gazebo" in the coop thread.

Nice to finally get to the right spot.

Things never seem to move right. I am going to be stuck in town for a few weeks. I need to be out of my house before the weekend of the 7th and 8th of June. My cleaners are coming in. I have medical stuff I need to stay in town for. I am going to need to find someplace to park here around town. Any one in the Witman or noth that has a space I can park? No idea how long. Hopefully only a few days. It is so frustrating. I had gone in 2 months ago, called them every week, they just got back to me. They, my doctors office sent in an order with my name misspelled with, Vonnita, not Bonnita, and my birth date 5/25/1925, not 5/21/1947. Apparently all my calling helped then in figuring things out, but! She said they have only had it for 2 weeks! In the end it dose not mater the story, what is, is and now I have to stay in town longer. It is usually a 6 to 8 week process. With a start date of next Monday.

Thanks. Sorry to have to ask. I will pay you for the incovenouse. I will have a few chicks.

im sry you are having a hard time right now. If I was closer I would offer. I hope things work out and there is someone who is close and can offer a parking space for you. I also hope all your medical issues get better.
