Arizona Chickens

I'm not saying there isn't rooster that are worth more that $10 I'm just saying I wouldn't spend that much because I wouldn't get that out of them. If I were breeding show birds, I would probably pay up to $50 for a rooster, but I don't so I won't.

In my grandpa's day it was 25 cents for a chick and $5 for a hen (man I wish they were still that cheap)

Moma Hen Chris, I don't mean to sound like um saying your rooster aren't worth $20, I'm sure they are, I'm just saying I wouldn't buy them for that much, no disrespect ment

I understand what you are saying DC1. No disrespect taken. My boys came from good bloodlines. I just want to recoup some monies back as most would use these boys for breeding and selling chicks.

Someone on FB offered to buy one of the boys after another person never came to get him. Then others offered free roosters to this same person and I never heard from that person again either. Kinda frustrating when someone renigs on their word. I am sure they will find good forever homes.

Hatching is fun! And addicting.. Except with shipped eggs it can be very frustrating when nothing hatches! I need the 12 step program too.. I am doing the same as you, I want all the colors of eggs! ALL of them! Haha...and then some pens of other breeds too.. I told my husband I only needed 4 pens.. Wait no 5.. Maybe 6... Ha..

omgosh you sound just like me. I am up to 5 coops to be built and a few in the duck run and told him tonight what if we let our just egg layers run in our livestock yard...rofl. sad isnt it? I love love love it and ongosh what kind of NN mix is on your avatar pic? Love it!!!

Boy does quail sound nice.. Not only their sound but to have.. Do you have photos to show your set up? Where did you get them? Also, are all of their eggs fertile? If so I might want some for our next broody? I do know they have a different diet. I was asking my friend that takes in wild birds a a resue to get them better for re- release.. Some she says will never be able to go back out into the wild, so she has a plethora of birds... More questions on the way...

I'll have to get photos during the daytime tomorrow. Quail eggs usually have a good fertility rate, even shipped. I think most people get 70% hatch rate from shipped quail eggs as long as there is a good male to female ratio. Since mine are so young I don't plan to test fertility for a while. The eggs will be for eating for a month or two at least, maybe until fall when it cools down again.

I got mine from a breeder here in town that was working with jumbo browns and whites. At four weeks most of my chicks were over 6 ounces and they are still growing and filling out. I was impressed by how calm they were from the start when I know some people have trouble with their quail being flighty. He said he always selected for calmness as well as size in his jumbo browns.

Ditto to this. I hope I didn't sound negative either. I will not be using them for anything except breakfast for now and $20 wouldn't make sense to me. For 4-h and Show I can see paying a good amount for good stock. They are great programs.

I see so many people wanting free roosters. I have invested more than $20 into each one and I think this would be a fair rehoming fee for each.  I figure if someone wants to breed them and then sell the chicks, they are making a profit and I a loss. I would hate to see them go to the stew pot.

I think $20.00 for a good rooster /good lines + your time in loving on him is extremely cheap. If I were a breeder that would be a very small investment.. I hope he can help someone in their new flock...

Value of a chicken, hen, pullet, rooster, or cockerel, I fell very greatly. A barnyard mix still has value. What dose it coast to raise the bird? That depends, $3.00 to nearly $5.00 a month, depending on how you feed you chickens, don't forget time, to care for them.

Some chickens are able to forage for almost all their food in the right location. When you read profiles of a chicken breed it is pointed out wither or not a good forager. Size of your flock is not, to me, my guide line. It is what I want from my flock. What I am saying, when you sell a chicken about 6 mo old you have $18.00-$35.00 in he/she.

A good layer is of value at any age to a point. We know BYC chickens will reliably lay longer then 1 to 1-1/2 years. A good looking roaster with attributes you want (breed, size, color, temperament). To improve your flock $20.00 is cheep. A free rooster translates to a barnyard mix and surpluses, and chicken fricassee with dumplings. In our group we will give a beloved rooster away to a good home, because we know the background.

Profit comes in selling baby chicks, well breed chicks you pay more for. Hatchery $3.00-$4.00, chicks with breeding $9.00 on up. I think I am trying to say I agree.

(If I am a little disconnected in my writing, it has been a long day, very tired and not sure if I made any since of above, it was clear to me but putting it in writing I fear has defeated me.). :th

Personally I never have and never intendt to spend more than $10 on a rooster. As I see it if your not doing large scale breeding all the rooster is doing is eating feed. But I probably think that because I learned everything from my grandpa who thinks you should still only pay 25 cents for a chick haha

I agree with you. These are in fact chickens still. I can't help but think a dozen eggs is how much $? A cooked chicken at Costco is $5. It's not organic or very large but $5? It's really good too. Unless it's a nice rooster and it was going to breed nice chicks and sustain a flock, I wouldn't be paying very much for any chicken. How many eggs do they lay in their lifetime?

With the Chickenionization, we pay low prices. I pay $10.00 for free range skinny breasted chickens, with heads and feet still on. Cheaply feed up CX is about 6 weeks then to market..... Yummmmm.

Growth hormones to feed for max 4 weeks. The last 2 no hormones. Then they can be labeled hormone free. Work that goes in to them is mostly picking up dead birds every day. Auto feed and water. Never clean their building while they are in it, after off to market, front end loader clean it out with the decaying body's if dead chickens that were missed. Yes it is cheep, it is tender, you think it tastes great. If that is so why do people from Europe and other country's think our chicken is tasteless. They agree they are fat, a lot of meat, and very tender, But tasteless. The chicken we send over seas goes into the low end stores. Our chicken is the spam of their world.

No of eggs by breed, 300 eggs for laying breeds, 260 to 160 a year for some, 60 a year for others. A chicken will take a day off from laying at intervals by breed. They are finding, thanks to BYC keeps that some chickens will lay at 5 yr and 6 yrs quite reliably, at a slower rate (instead of 6 eggs 4). A guess for a good healthy happy layer 1,200 plus eggs in 5 years.

Oh yes, some photos!! How much bigger is jumbo? My girlfriend said she thinks that the white pigeon's get picked out by the hawks.. Who knows about that but are the white quail all white? What do you feed them? Did you buy fertile eggs or babies?

I see you are in Tempe, need to have you over for tea.. I have so many questions... :yiipchick
