I'm a little confused, because I thought pasty butt was more frequent when chicks were too warm.  I've not had to deal with it, so I have no direct experience.

Same here, not sure what causes it, just thankful I don't see much of it. My new chicks are on regular dry chick starter, older chicks on fermented chick starter. Does the fermented feed help? I think so. Pasty poots are pretty rare in my flock (knock on wood!)

Hey y'all! I have a 5 month old polish that just started laying. And MAN, IS SHE LAYING EGGS! She has laid two eggs per day all week, only taking one day off. I'm sure its her...I've watched her sitting in the box , sing her song and hop out. Voila! Little bitty egg. I wouldn't be shocked if it was my RR or even the Ameracaunas...but a Polish? This girl is a keeper! And a rescue chicken at that!

Said it takes like 25 hours for an egg to produce inside te chicken I think so you may have another bird laying unless I'm totally wrong. Maybe I am because it seems I'm the only one that replied to it and there's a lot of people here with tons of knowledge. I'm just a newb

About 3 days ago, I noticed one of my adolescent Ameraucanas stumbling and having serious difficulty walking or standing. I figured it got stung by a scorpion and would recover soon enough, so I separated it from the rest of the flock because it was getting trampled on. The next day I had two more birds exhibiting the same symptoms, and then today yet another two, for a total of five birds! 3 of the 5 are pure Ameraucana, the other two are a cross of Ameraucana & bantam Cochin. To me, it seems highly unlikely all 5 of these birds were stung by scorpions within days of each other, so I'm at a loss for how to explain this. They are acting semi paralyzed, but are eating and drinking and seem to be otherwise healthy except for the fact that they cant walk or even stand up very well! BTW, if it matters, none of these birds are adults, they are aged between 3 and 5 months. What's going on here?????

The first thing I think of when a bird has trouble standing and is stumbling like that is Marek's disease. It is very common. I agree with MagicChicken, post on the diseases thread and see what other people say. There are sooo many diseases chickens CAN get, but you have to think of the most common ones first. I also agree to cull. Firstly, you don't want them spreading whatever it is. Secondly, if you are hatching and raising birds, you want the strongest and most resistant stock and these obviously do not fit that bill.

How do you store your hatching eggs prior to setting?  My quail are starting to lay and are much more consistent layers than my chickens now that the heat is here.  They usually lay in the afternoon so I'm out collecting eggs often because of the heat.  I'll wait a few weeks while I separate out breeding groups from the colony pens but I'm not sure how to store their eggs until I set them and I think the fridge is too cold. Is ambient valley room temperature to warm?

I use a "Red Wine Fridge". It doesn't get as cold as a standard household fridge. I remember checking the temp when I got it and thinking "this is perfect for eggs!" But I could not tell you now what that temp was, but works well for me. I *think* Red wine is supposed to be stored at 65* but I'm not a wine drinker, so its perfect for eggs. Now if I could only get an egg turner in it!

A rampant case of mites can cause this (and even death).

I have an easter egger that used to peck me once in a while. I finally had enough of it and when she did it the last time, I flicked her with my finger (out of reflex). She was pretty startled. She's not pecked me again. I guess it was enough to get her attention. I'm not sure if you are supposed to do that or not. We still remain buddies - she jumps on my legs when I'm sitting outside and put my feet up.

Animal abuse is wrong, but tough love is not. You're the "alpha hen" in the flock and the birds need to understand that.
