Arizona Chickens

I have two NN's and they are awesome!!! Best personalities and an egg a day, can't complain. My most friendly birds by far. But everyone who sees them looks at them like they are alien chickens. If you can get past the visual differences, great birds!

I agree NNs are awesome & by far the cutest chicks. I planned on raising only Orps & Marans but the first time I saw a NN in person it was love at first sight! They are loaded with personality too.

Well, I finally made it back. Never did get the number of that Mack truck that ran over me. I'm now drowning in chickens. Six 13 week old chickens in the small yard, four 9 week old chickens in the middle bedroom and 5 year olds out running around. Did get anther rooster in the small bunch out in the small yard. He's trying to crow and he sounds like he swallowed a kazoo so we named him Roody Kazoo. Not as pretty as Henry. Hope he gets better looking as he gets older. So I have 10 BOs, 3 BSLs and 2 RSLs. Named the RSLs Rosie and Rita. Anyway it's nice to be back in the land of the living. Not 100% back but getting there. My husband underwent brain surgery 3 weeks ago for a small tumor and he's going to Phoenix tomorrow for one radiation treatment at the Barrows Institute. Later this year I'll have eggs coming out my ears. Already need to give away about 5 dozens. Hope everyone else has had a good 2 months.

Broody's in the summers are no fun for us... However the new broody came off her shared eggs early.. By 2 weeks, with 10 plus day old chicks.. Cheryl is still sitting on the 2 left.. Last night we got 4 other 10 plus day old chicks from @Arizonachicken.. The little buggers left the nest after 5 am.. They are on their own today.. Hoping that Cheryl will not only take them in but they will learn her sounds.. I did remove the eggs so it seems she might be done sitting on eggs.. This is her 2nd time around, she was probably like, "what are these 10 day old brats doing here?"
Her & Fiona seems to be co parenting the 2 chicks..

@Arizonachiken had the seed box a loved it, hope she will post.. :highfive:
We are taking it to a Master Gardner this evening, they used to have chikens.. Now they travel
to much.. Their seed collection is vast.. Can't wait to share...:woot

My 3 little peeps are now 4 weeks old. getting real ugly with loosing the fluff and getting the feathers. Have the mister up and I turn it on at around 104° and shut it off when it gets back down to about that. Thought 1 was in trouble, laying on it's side, legs stretched out and flapping it's wing.... then it rolled over and did the same thing on the other side, moved and another chick took it's place. So guess they wanted a dust bath... LOL

Did get some nipples in today from Amazon. 25 for $7.80 and since my daughter has the student prime the shipping was free. The only ones I could find before were 4 for $10. So now I just need to get some silicone and a plastic bottle.

Once again, thank you all for all your help here.........

I have a 5 gallon bucket with 3 of those nipples on it. It hangs in the shade and the other day I removed the lid and felt it to make sure. Nice cool water and don't have to fill it very often. Splash in some ACV and you're set.

Jubilation - it's good to see you back. Wishing you and your husband all the best. I'm picturing all your chickens and it's making me smile! I moved 2 NZX rabbits into my family room when it got over a hundred outside. My 75 year old mother thinks I'm crazy and says she is embarrassed to tell family members how I'm doing when they ask. I keep inviting her to come out to visit, but so far she's not interested

I think I'm going to take Eleanor out of the broody breaker tomorrow. She hasn't laid an egg yet but she is eating normally so I'm hoping she's lost her interest in setting by now.

Has anyone tried a portable evap cooler for a coop? We saw an ad for 1 at Home Depot for $100 which we thought might be good for in the coop. Last year the girls were too young to lay during the summer so they didn't spend much time in the coop when it was hot. Now that they have to sit in there for long periods of time to lay I'm getting concerned for them. http://www.homedepot.com/p/SPT-150-...for-87-5-sq-ft-SF-608R/202105060?N=5yc1vZc4kl Seems like it might help a little.

. My son is going to be so sad when he comes home today so I will be trying to get my quail eggs incubated. (ty to sil).

There are so many wonderful people in our group I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to meet you all.

Sorry about your little quail. I'm hoping you get some hatching from the eggs. Keep us updated.
R.I.P. To my wonderful hen Jesse. She didn't come out of her nesting box today (Which see does a lot) and when I when to bring her out she was passed. We didn't expected to live past two months because of her neurological condition (Seizures) but she was two and a half. She was my first chicken and just like one of my dogs. You'll be missed.

Sorry about your Jesse. So easy to get attached to them.
We call them "Shepinois". I worked a dog for Goodyear or Avondale, can't remember. He was a Shepinois and was like a Chihuahua in steroids. Very nasty dog when on patrol, but the handler said he was just a snuggle little bear when his 2 year old tugged at his ears and such. He had a ton of problems with him such as biting handler during a competition and biting him in the Cheif of Polices office too I think. His name was Boris. He was a Baaaaad little doggy.

Handler sent him onto a suspect in a new neighborhood under construction. Saw the dog in plain view, released the dog. The guy dips around a corner and the dog follows handler in trail. Handler gets around the corner to find Boris pulling a guy out from under his truck by his boots. He was working on his truck on a creeper. Lol. No harm done, the dog only got the boot heel.

I think because I live in town & in developed area of Mesa, I have less predators then those of you that are in more rural and outlying areas. I'm sorry to hear about this this is very sad. *hugs
I'm in Tempe near University and Priest. I've seen grey foxes not half a mile from my home many times. They look just like a cat when you see them at night, except for their giant bushy tail. I think people see them all the time but don't recognize what they really are. My run has netting over it, but it will be replaced by wire eventually.

Hoping nothing gets through the netting. I have several neighbors that free range their chickens and don't secure them in coops at night so I think theirs would the first to go, not mine.

Cherry, one of our Leghorn mutts, really outdid herself today. Her normal eggs weight in at 48-50 grams, barely a medium. Today's weighed in at 71 grams, borderline jumbo!! Ouch!!!

Double yolker?

Can't wait to hear what they add to the box!

I think I've got a hen trying to go broody. She spends over half the day in the nest box, but she does give up and join her sisters cooling off on the damp earth in the heat of the day. If she starts spending too much time in the box I'll have to cage her, somewhere cool.
