Arizona Chickens

Lost a Partridge Cochin yesterday. Actually, I just found the body yesterday, looks like it had been dead for at least a week or two. I had a coop pushed up against a wall, and it apparently got wedged behind the coop and couldn't get out. So many chickens running around, I never realized I was missing one.
There are many, many ways for chickens to die, the number 1 reason is predators, 2 is diseases or sicknesses, 3 is probably chickens killed by other chickens, and it looks like coop/run layout needs to be added to the list.
I have made my run about as predator proof as humanly possible. I am learning about diseases and treatments as fast as I can. I keep an eye out for any "personality clashes" and separate any chickens that can't get along, and have enough room for any chicken to escape from a bully.
Now, I guess I need to take a look at how the run is laid out, and eliminate any "squeeze" areas that a chicken couldn't escape from by itself.

So sorry for your loss. :( we almost lost a cochin in my run because it got between a shelter place and the wall. I couldn't find my DH number 3 cochin and went looking. I found it just in time.

I know when I broke my toe I though I was dieing haha but it looks like its already healed, not swollen or anything, no limp

Oh good. So glad it's healed. Chickens are so adventurous, mine climb the hill next to our house and are always jumping out of trees, off of rocks and other crazy stuff. Whoever decided that the word chicken meant "coward" was way off base! :)

One time I broke a toe while in a pool (hit it on a step while pushing off) and didn't realize it until I got out. OMG, the pain, I thought my heartbeat was in my toe for a while there, the throbbing was horrible. Lol!

So sorry for your loss. It's amazing, the things that chickens can survive, and also the things that can kill them. They are so tough and so fragile at the same time.

My little gold sex link broke her toe

she doesn't seem to be bothered by it, I didn't notice until she was hanging out with me on the porch.
Also, is the Tucson Poultry Club the one that has the show in November at the pima fair grounds? I'd love to go to a meeting if I'm allowed to
Yes, you can join, and yes, they have the show in November.
And yes, that looks like it oughta hurt.

I got my girls in from Murray Mcmurrays yestetday, they are all doing great except one not sure whats wrong with her. I woke up at 4am hearing one of the chicks chirping loud si I went to the brooder and seen her laying there with her eyes closed and chirpin. So I picked her up and sat her down on the table so I can see whats wrong, the poor thing was all over the place. She was stumpling, couldnt sit or stand correctly, eyes closed, she kept rolling her head back and forth, standing strait up then falling backwards and floping around. So I diped her beak in water and she drank some and after about a hour or so in the hispitol brooder she looked fine so I ut some food in for her and water. She drank and ate on her own then after about a hour she started doing it again then she would be fine then do it again. Im so confused I dont know whats wrong with her and was thinking maybe it would be better to dispatch her then watch her suffer. What do yall think?

So sorry to hear you have a chick with problems.

I can't offer advice about whether to end her suffering or not. We had one chick that was never "right" from the very first day but we were newbies and didn't realize that something might be wrong. She lived for about 8-10 weeks and then just died one day. She wasn't suffering as far as we could tell, just not quite like the rest of them. Your chicks issue seems more intense, but I don't have the experience to tell you what might be wrong, just offering my support.

Chickens and their trees! Now that my babies are free range, they just love to hang out in the trees! And they jump off the porch, and pretty much whatever else there is to jump off of haha

I got stepped on by my friends draft horse once, that broke my toe, and not two weeks later, my pig was running around and stepped on my toe and omg that hurt more than when it originally broke haha, thankfully that was the only time I broke a toe

Cool, where are the meetings, and where can I sign up for the newsletter? And yeah, it does look painful, but she doesn't seem to care, and it looks healed so I don't know what to do about it, if I need to do anything :/

I had an apartment for a year right at the turn to go to Alpine, Az. Can't remember the name of the road but I think there's a Shell Station across the street. I'm the worlds Biggest LSU fan and watched every game at that restaurant out in front of Bashas (I think) while I was living/working there. Hunted in Alpine for those dang squirrels with the pointy ears (Abarth?). This is where i want to bring my wife in the hope that she likes it and we can move there FOREVER. was that you that was having the problem with a neighbor about the chickens? Hope all is well.

Yep that's me he's such an @$$. My girls make noise when they lay eggs and while I'm out there they talk to me (a lot!) and another one of my neighbors comes over just to listen to them talk. Meanwhile there is a chihuahua next to me (directly behind him) who barks constantly if she can set one of my chickens or if there is another dog barking or if a human is anywhere around. And another neighbor has 5 dogs that never shut up and there is a hound dog that howls all day, etc, etc...you getmy point yet I'm the one he complains about and gets the cops called on me. It's likehe's got personal vendetta or something.
He's really gonna hate life though because a friend of mine who happens to live on the other side of him has decided to get chickens AND turkeys lol!

You really should bring your wife up here it is so much nicer. Slower pace, usually nicer, more open people. And it's not so dang hot! Let me know when you come up we can hang out at Trail Riders (that restaurant in front of Bashas) and talk chicken.
