Arizona Chickens

I'm hoping it I can replace the needle myself. I don't want to have to move it around too much
Ya know this stikes a nerve with me...in a good way. :D I'm a record player fanatic and you ought to see my collection. Needles are still available and easy to replace. If the old needle is still in place, get the number off of it. If not, flip that carridge over and there should be a number on one of the sides. Use that number to match it with the correct needle. You can get needles at Garage-a-Records, Parts Express, Radio Shack and many other places I can't remember right now. With the exception of about three, these are all Magnavox. OOOOH, that's not all of them and don't get me started...LOL!!!! - :clap -BB Bobby Basham Tucson, Arizona
Awesome collection, can't imagine your records.. :weee I will look tomorrow. Thank you..

Moringa never heard of it, wonder if it will grow were im at.
It should grow fine. Moringa loves heat, will stop growing when the temps drop and will die back in frosts without protection.

Oh, that's good to hear. You know, that's the thing, I love eating strange greens! I've loved eating every one I've ever eaten. Well, some of that late season escarole was about as bitter as anything I've ever eaten. I'll try putting some in a bowl today to get a handle of how much they're actually eating and then some clipped the run wall. Have you had yours overwinter yet?
Yeah I even eat bitter greens.

My tree was planted last August and I over wintered it. It was only about 5 feet tall over winter and is planted against a south facing wall so it had plenty of reflected heat and I did cover it with a sheet on frost nights and we didn't get as hard frosts this year as we have some years. It didn't freeze back at all or loose any leaves, but it didn't grow...at all. Until the temps went back up into the 70s it was pretty much hibernating. I got flowers in May but zero pods.

It's still putting out a few flowers but not as many as spring.

You know, I haven't minded the occasional leaf while out in the yard. I'll have to look and see if there is a difference in the taste of those in the ground compared to the ones still in pots. It's really shocking how fast they grow. I looked at mine one day and it was 11' and in just a couple days it was 13'. Now it's 5'.

The only thing more amazing about their growth from seed is how they respond to pruning. I pruned only a few days ago and all the new growth is pretty amazing. I put the trunks into a pot to try rooting, I'll let you know how it works out. Grapes and figs are super easy to make cuttings from.
How did you do your moringa cuttings? Just stick them in the soil?

I put over 100 moringa seeds into the seed box, all that I had. So, maybe you could find some in there still. I could send you some cuttings to root next winter when I trim the vines back. With figs you just need a segment of 2 year wood (or older?). I've only done them in very early spring, when I prune the trees right before they sprout. Maybe it could be done now if you removed most of the leaves?
There are still moringa seeds in the box. I'm hoping I'll get pods eventually so I can put some moringa seeds in the box.

Hey CF, while doing a people finder search, I found another in Phoenix named Effie J Sarber, age 102. I guess our family has longevity genes. My dad is 81 and still kicking, but not hard or high. I guess 58 ain't so old, huh?
You're just a pup!

Good morning everyone. I know I have not been on here in a while but it is with a heavy heart that I let everyone know that Phoebe (my Avatar) passed away yesterday. I went out in the morning to check on the girls and all three were roaming the yard and acting normal. I refilled their "pool" shallow pan in the coop that we keep water in so that they can stand in to keep cool They love it. Then around 4pm I went out to take some kitchen scraps to the compost and she was laying on her side dead in the coop. I am wondering if anyone may have an idea what could cause this? I believe she may have been egg bound as she had not laid an egg in a week but she had no other symptoms. I did notice some very liquid and greenish in color stool near the coop but not sure if it was hers. She was still eating and drinking water as well as roaming the yard and spending time with her sisters in the compost bin. She seemed to be normal and the only other thing could think of was that her feathers looked a little ratted and rough looking. I thought maybe she was starting to molt as she had not done this yet and was around 14 months old. I also thought maybe that was why she hadn't laid an egg in a week since I read that can happen when they molt. My other two birds still seem just fine although I could tell they were a little off after Phoebe passed yesterday. They seemed more cuddly and wanted to sit on our laps more than usual. Any advice would be great because I feel horrible if she was egg bound and I didn't do anything to help this. I guess I just thought she was molting and it was normal.

I was also wondering if anyone knows of anyone locally that has some chicks for sale. My wife and I are looking to get 2 or 3 chicks to add to our flock. Thanks for any help or advice.
Sorry about your loss. It's hard sometimes to find out why they died.

When I first grew celery here in AZ I started with Tall Utah (I think?) and I was so disappointed that it was hit or miss as far as bitterness. I was always pulling stalks from the outside of each plant and mixing individuals from several plants together. Then I realized that the bitterness was mostly confined to specific plants. All the stalks from a given plant were either bitter or not. So, from a patch of about 100 plants I tasted each one and pulled out all the bitter plants. Interestingly, I removed almost exactly half. I then grew out and kept seeds from the remaining plants and from those seeds most of the plants were not bitter. I think it needed another year or so of selection, but even with the first crop we have been so pleased. I've been planting from that first batch for the past six years or so. In fact, it's probably the most favorite thing we grow in the winter. The dried leaves are such a treat in the heat of summer when we're unable to grow it, but can still get that amazing flavor. I think there are some of those seeds in the seed box. Even after all these years the germination rate is surprisingly good.

That's good to know! I did get some of the celery seed and I'll plant them this winter. I'll do as you did and pull the bitter plants out. They must produce a lot of seed since there was so much in the seed box.

i have a severe UTI. i thought the pain was from my spinal stenosis but um no.
Hope you feel better quick.

Thanks for your purchase.
Have not been on BYC for a long long time. I will have to get back here more often. I just updated all my info since it's been almost 7 years since it was updated. 2 more grandchildren since then. Same dog and cats but not as many hens and only one goose now.
Thanks again.

Welcome back!

Yes, and my feed bill is going up even though the numbers are going down because a lot of them are growing really fast right now. I hatched a lot this year to try to get some really good breeders and show birds, especially the Marans, they are harder than the dickens to breed up. I hatched 2-3 hundred of those alone.
They sure can eat while they are growing up.

Good Morning everyone.

I have a question please. Last night I bought an 18 pack of eggs from the store and somehow left them on the counter all night. Are they any good now?

So i let my Four week old girls out into there run this morning from there grow up coop and they all just ran back into the coop lol hopefully they will explore the run later during the day, we will see.

Agh, :ep
Woke up this morning to 1 of the lotus pond plants is peeking out a green steam!! So
Exciting.. Thank you @Sill for all that filing.. :weee. I think we re going to have to break down
& buy a new trough.. The large size is like $160.00.. If we get a large one I'm gona need you to come back over, bring more of those pods & start filing...

Also, we will need a plastic or possibly metal covered with plastic.. Some type of a divider so the ducks can get in & swim around with the plants root system separated.. Any ideas??
I do have the cage with plastic covering that might work.. It is in 12x12 pieces..
