Arizona Chickens

The heat is something to worry about as much as the cold. We live in Cottonwood and it can get up in the triple digits as well as snowing. For the heat, make sure they have access to a water bath and a fan. For cold and at night I would suggest a heat lamp. The comfort of your animal:The production of your animal.

Why breeds do you have??

Ughh this is not the time of year for evap cooling. Probably don't need to be having a get together this time of year if you don't have ac. 71 would be awesome, I thought I was pushing it at 75. I keep getting letters from aps telling me what my usage is compared to my neighbors. I wish they would print it on softer paper....

Hahaha! That is funny! Man, you people are killing me. I keep my air at 79, sometimes 80 otherwise I am grabbing for the slippers!

I keep the house set at 82. I wouldn't mind it being cooler, but my pocketbook wouldn't like it. After washing and drying clothes for 7 people, dishes and hot showers the electric bill needs a break and it comes with the air temp. Plus we have two original 26 yr old units on the house...not exactly energy efficient

There are usually a lot of Seramas at the November poultry show in Tucson. I have large fowl myself. I don't know who the Serama breeders are. The Tucson show always has a sale area. If you don't see any birds you like in the Sale area, check out the birds on exhibit and find an exhibitor with birds you do like. Talk to them. They may not have birds for sale at the show, but they could have birds available in the future.

The November 2014 show will be Saturday Nov 22 (plus Sunday morning Nov 23) at the Pima County Fairgrounds.

If you have never been to a poultry show, go! You will see lots of breeds you don't normally see. It's a great way to learn more about chickens.

Poultry show exhibitors are numbered so the judges do not know who owns the birds they are judging. If you see birds you like, write down the exhibitor number then go to the front desk and have someone look up the exhibitor's name and contact information for you.

I tend to like the cooler temps. f I had my way it would be 65-68 in the house during the summer. Unfortunately, I live with a cooler blooded individual and we compromise at around 72-75. I sweat a lot. Lol! At least my workroom has A/C and I can keep it as cool as I want in there. :)

Sounds exciting.. Photos of the seed & where you plan on planting it? Soil ect...

This is the area we are planning to dedicate to the Sorghum and the different seeds I have. They're all heirloom varieties. Now I have to get my butt in gear and get the soil ready for planting.

ROFL!

Today I finally found my blue orp hen's secret nest. She had 27 eggs in it & had pulled her feathers out to line the nest. Got worried when she didn't come running with the others when I brought cold melon out. I searched for her for over an hour before finding her dug into the sage bushes. I put her in a dog crate in the garage with a portable a/c unit in hopes of breaking her of her broodiness. I did throw out the eggs and now have to figure out how to block that area from her.

I've only made it with Olive Oil. Do others use other oils or something?

Also, just wondering if anyone has paid attention to what crops are planted around town? I'm getting more and more interested in gardening and crops but being a newbie I still don't know the names of most of them. I should e got a pic but this field down the road has some sort of crop that has what look to be little purple/lavender flowers on them. Is it a cover crop or ??? Thanks ahead of time.
Yep, sounds like alfalfa, its everywhere here since it grows so well in the heat.

That's a very nice offer but I don't like figs I less they're in Newtons. Ha. Don't really like those either. In oatmeal I like apples, cinnamon, butter and nuts. I need more suggestions for oatmeal toppings.

I never liked fruit in my oatmeal, but all kinds of nuts are yum! Oh and the spices too!

We had a good meal. No mud, but the last half mile was a dirt road, so I took it slow. I have a hearing problem, so a lot of the meeting went in one ear and out the other, but we were discussing the November poultry show at the Pima county fair. After the meeting was over, I was informed that I was the show co-chairman! Being deaf su@&s!

Congrats on the new chairmanship! I'm sure you will have a great time and meet lots of new peeps.

you or Sill come visit me for an apple before there all gone! Dorset apples... I'm sorry the chicks and I ate all the big ones!

And guess what happened yesterday??!!..... My baby Red RIR laid her first

egg!
Oh yum! I'm so going! I love home-grown apples and the ones here are usually nice and tart. Will PM you and set up a time.

Congrats on the new first egg! It's always eggciting to find a first.

Oh ok. Have you ever seen "Dirty Jobs"? They did one in Queen Creek at a Olive Tree place and showed the process. Where do you get yours? Might be worth the drive for fresh olive oil from the source.
I've wanted to go there for a tour ever since I found out there was a local place that presses their own AZ grown olives.
