Hello everyone..... I haven't been a big poster but follow this thread regularly.  I have recently had some major hip surgery and need to find new homes for my 9 chickens.  It is just too difficult to keep up with them at this point in my recovery.  I have 2 Australorps, 2 Marons, 1 Barred Rock and 4 EE's.  They range in age from 1 to 2.5 years in age and all are healthy.  If you can help please let me know..... they are free to a good home.

I'm interested in the 2 Australorps & 2 Marans! I could be there close to 1 30 after work, , if that works for you tomorrow! maybe k9Dave & I can come at the same time if its easier for you? Just a thought.

I've got 119 coturnix quail eggs in my now refurbished cabinet incubator.  Had one more but it had a crack and the egg lost too much moisture.  Lockdown happens Thursday so I should have lots of chicks by Sunday and Monday. 

My first batch are four weeks old and are almost the same size as the adults and some of the "baby" boys are already crowing!  Yes they can crow at four weeks!  Good thing they are much quieter than chickens.  A couple of weeks more and they can go to freezer camp. I got twelve hens that I separated out into two breeding cages and got both groups a roo from another breeder.  Those boys are nice and big, crowing, and so far are being gentlemen with the ladies. They got a couple of weeks for the honeymoon so if they stay good to the girls they will not get processed with the other roos.

I have a few extra young quail hens if anyone needs them.  Since they need to be kept in groups of 4-7 hens to each roo you don't often find extra hens available. They are fed organic feed and get FF like the chickens do.

The heat doesn't seem to effect the quail hens like it does the chickens.  While the chickens are each only laying about every other day I get 16-21 eggs a day from my 21 quail hens. Delicious! 

I'll let you know if I can adopt some quail hens. I can't wait to eat some adorible quail eggs that you brought over thank you so very much. It was a pleasure to have you over and to Finally meet some Byc members!

omgosh I got my first duck egg. It was laid in the area we wash the pools out in of course (yuck). It is so small and cute but I am sooo excited. I will post a pic later as my phone just died. @CityFarm
 have your ducks started to lay yet? 

I pray she moves to laying in the duck house and NOT in the muddy dump area.

3 is enough for you, that is great... Sometimes I wish we only had 3. they poop so much.. What breeds do you have..?

lol yes they do poo a lot! i have a BR named amy and 2 new additions one is a BR mutt and the other im not sure at all about. mutts i call them.

We have mutts. This is our old Clark Kent Jr. We were hoping for a pair when we bought the jungle fowl.. We have 2 hens instead..

Agh, how fun...looking good..

I have one stuck in the shell.  It pipped fine and started to zip, about 1 1/2" and then couldn't progress.  I waited overnight and then decided it had to be stuck because it was strongly peeping and moving, but not making any progress.  sure enough, it was "sticky" and couldn't move around to finish the zip.  Poor baby so I got the tweezers and damp paper towel and started removing the outer shell with the chick peeping and wiggling the whole time.  LOL  I have it open enough that a wing and foot are out and the head is ready to come out, but I have a feeling there is still too much goop in there behind the chick.  I have it back in the incubator warming back up and have upped the humidity some more.  None of the other eggs have pipped yet.  I will give them a while longer and then I will candle to see if they have internally pipped.  This is a bummer, but at least I have 3 live babies so far.  Even the two that hatched on their own had some goopy stuff on them, so I have a humidity issue.  Hopefully, I have remedied that now.  Keeping fingers crossed that more will be able to hatch alive and well.  Wish me luck.

UPDATE:  Had to open some more of the shell and on the last try, the head popped out, the legs started kicking and the chick shot up out the shell while I was still holding it.  YAY  Chick is cheeping loudly and flopping all around in the incubator.  Lots of goop still on it, but I did get the worst glob off.  No blood, yolk sack has absorbed, so it was definitely time to hatch.  I'm going to have a nervous breakdown!  LOL

Oh wow, epic... Glad the little s-!t is out.. I have not heard someone say nervous breakdown in a while.. I remember when people used to say that all the time.. I bet your nevers were breaking..

e I will be at my brother house for the next 4 weeks. I will have internet! I will be able to read and catch up on all that is going on and how everyone is doing.

It was a hard day for my girls. I drove from 9 until 5:30 (17:30). I have been trying to do about 250 a day so am not on the road a total of 6 plus stops. My speed is 45mph-55 mph. So I can not go to fast. SOOOOooo this is what I saw when I finally stopped for the day.

As you see they were not happy travelers. They are still not to happy. I had been stopping every 1 to 1-1/2 hrs for about 15 min or more. Giving them a treat of some kind. Also it is supposed to be in the low 60's with some locations in the high 50's around Mpls. It is a little cool. A drop of nearly 10 degrees at night. It had been mid 60's with a few nights in the very low 70's. Needless to say I have some concerns, mostly for the Silkie, Sweetie. I made sure no drafts, I put a pin light in the one side near the water and food dish. It will be dark until I uncover the,.

I need some Silkie advise about the cold and just how cold hardy they are. I am wondering if I should pick up a reptile heater, ether an element or a heated stone, something to take the chill off for the Silkie. At lest until she adjusts a little. The lowest element I know of is 75w. That seems a little high for such a small coop. A heated rock may be the way to go? Other then that make sure they are covered every night to make it as draft free as possible.

More later when I het them in their new pen. My brother has a kennel not being used.

Do you only have two? For some reason I thought it was 3? Good to hear from you..

Sorry to hear about losing your Hens Marcy....are you sure it's from the heat? I've NEVER lost a bird to the heat and I live in central Arizona in kind of a low spot where it gets a bit hotter even than the rest of the area I live in. I've had temp to 117 and not lost a bird. I don't use misters, but the birds go under the porch where it is dark and cool. they find their own means of keeping cool. They make use of the dust bath daily, and I do have a grey water trough out back that they occasionally soak their feet in. otherwise, they hate it when I turn on the mister and run from it. They don't like the swamp cooler I set up for them...they run from it. They only like that cool spot under the porch so I let them stay there. They are out foraging morning and evening, and I do wet things down when there is no rain so maybe just the coolness of the ground itself is good enough for my birds. I have lots of shade too, so I guess that helps. My hens get organic fruit and veggie scraps at least 3 times a week, and then their lay crumbles. They are as happy as a hen can be.
