Arizona Chickens

So, my chickens are master composters! Here is a picture of what most of the area around our property (under trees) looked like before we got chickens and then what they have done to the areas they have access to. I'm putting most of it into our garden area for next year!

Fermented feed. There is a whole thread on it that would take years to read but in short it is regular feed that is fermented. I feed my chickens fermented feed...here is how I do it...
I have a 5 gallon bucket I loosely cover. I put about 15+ cups of the blue sky feed in, cover with water and mix, stir 1-2 times a day and add water to cover feed as needed. Within 3 days (or less with the heat) it will be bubbling. That's all the good bacteria fermenting in the bucket. You can feed before the fermentation kicks in though.
I feed once a day, in the am. So I go out in the morning, scoop some FF in a strainer, set it on the bucket to drain back into the other feed. Then I clean up anything needed, change water, etc and within 5 minutes the feed is ready to be dumped into their dish. I continue to feed from my bucket until it gets low, then add a big heap and water again. Some people prefer to replenish after every feeding (too much work for me).
I noticed that my feed seems to last longer, they drink less water, and their poop smells less (which is a huge benefit for me in suburbia).
In short FF is great and easy to do!

I quit doing the FF but won't make that mistake again. The flies are not around as much now that I've started back. It makes their feathers shiny, firm stools, eat less and clean the bowl where without it fermented, they were wasting/scattering feed. I love it. It looks messy like it would be hard to clean but I use a cat litter scoop to drain it, and with a hose and NO Scrubbing it comes spotless. Seems like the wild birds don't like it either, but I don't really know if that's true. There have been less though for whatever reason.

How many birds are you feeding with the 5 gal bucket? Our flock is gonna triple when I move and will be needing to up the size of my current system.

So my dog Camo (Border Collie/Blackmouthed Curr/AustralianKelpie) usually keeps everyone on there toes around here, as far as the other animals go. I kenneled him this afternoon because he was being a little s@&t and broke the doggy door. The little plastic flap is now dangling by a corner thanks to him and we were providing A/C to outdoor Phoenix. (Ya'll are welcome if it seemed a little cooler). Anyways I left to run errands and come back to

Doggy door trained Chicken.

Wonder if you could Potty Train them? Can you imagine? Chickens coming and going as they please. It wouldn't hurt my feelings as when I have let a couple of them in in the past, they're like little vacuums and were cleaning the tile floor.

Ha ha! I used to have chickens that came in the house and I decided it was time to vacuum when they were grazing under the dining table. Lol
