Arizona Chickens

The BA that is broody and has the TJs eggs I left in the nest box where she went broody - dang cute to watch BUT I really didn't think this through too well.

The nest is about 8/10 inches off the ground and there's not much room for getting up to turn eggs, etc and I can see babies falling out of the nest!.

SO I am moving her tonight to her own broody pen - which I worked on today. I'll do it after dark and hope for the best. I put the broody box in a place where she can see out - just like her nest is now. Food, water and her own space for babies until she is ready to bring them out to the pasture or the run. AND its so dang hot - I don't know what she was thinking to go broody now!!!

Fingers and toes crossed for a good outcome - wish me luck.

Good luck and yes it is DANG hot!!! Why does August always tease us with cooler weather then BAM hits us in the face and reminds us summer is not gone yet? It was 114 here yesterday and it's now 109 on my shaded patio! Poor girls I keep telling them just a few more days.

Yesterday I was gone to the store and my husband said he looked out in the backyard and was convince we had a dead chicken. Snoop was laying on her side in the blazing sun on the cool deck (not so cool, btw) with her head rested against the quart waterer. When he opened the slider he spooked her back to life and she was squawking and flapping her wings and headed for the shade. He made up some ice water and they all drank and were perfectly fine by the time I got home. I am more than ready for some relief.

Hi friends! After a bobcat decimated our flock last year we haven't owned chickens. My daughter is now involved in her high school FFA and she's looking for a show quality birds for the fair. We are most interested in Cream Legbar, Orpingtons, or Wyandottes, but will consider other breeds. Thanks!

Ok got a set of nice 5 month old Cliff Redden line purebred Wheaten Ameracauna's this week. They are 5 months old. Here are some pics.

My poor old rescue roo was replaced by the new guy. He went to a new home this weekend.

My bother is staying home tomorrow so we can clean the garage. Then he said expecting snow in 3 weeks. Nooooop I am not expecting snow, I am leaving in 10-12 days, I will be gone. He could beg me to stay and commit to supporting me... No mater what I am gone. Snow? No not me. It will be turning cold (50's and 60's) in 2 weeks forecast. That is not for me.

I have lost 7 hens in the last year and a half to a Bobcat, Coyote and other assorted means. These girls will replace those lost layers.

How did I not see that Ad? Darn you! Has she rehome them all? I love the white with black laced necks.

Yes they are all re-homed. I left all the leghorns behind and she gave them away the next day. The black and white ones are light Bahamas. I hit them all with Ivomec before letting them loose.

So I got a dozen TJ Fertile eggs and asked around about a broody and looked into incubators. Yeah, should've been the other way around, I know. When I looked up the ideal temp in an incubator is 99.5 F. It's been about 100-101 F out ... what if I just put them in the nest boxes. They'd be ok during the day at these temps and the Hens would keep them warm at night. I mean, hey, it is only a $2.99 dozen eggs. The packing date was #237 (Aug. 26th). When would I candle them to see if they are viable and take them out before they become stinkbombs?
