Arizona Chickens

I have often thought about being a reverse snowbird but I don't want another house to maintain. I would like to take the camper and do a series of mini-trips (up to a month at a time) during the hottest part of the year, but that would mean giving up a big part of the poultry farm. We have a caretaker now, but don't know if he will stay through next summer. It is harder than anything to get a reliable person to do work here in the summer. I'm just not sure how many more summers I'm willing to put up with just to keep poultry. It is a dilemma, the poultry have become a big part of my life. Actually they have taken over my life

and that's the truth. We have a lot of gardening going on, too, so it's not just the birds tieing me down. And with all the desert rodents chewing on drip lines---heck, someone has to be here to monitor what's going on. And I think, if we were gone in July, we'd have missed out on our whole plum and fig tree harvests.

Up until a few months ago, we had a travel trailer, then we got a really sweet deal on a 36' Class A with a brand new $7000 motor, among other things. It would make it relatively easy for us to have a house at one end and live in the RV at the other. Or, as you say, just take long vacations during the worst of the heat. Of course, we don't have the big farm like you do - we just have a few egg-layers, and as much as I love the fresh eggs, I don't think we'd think twice about letting them keep us from getting away once we retire!

Why is it awful. DH and I are considering Port Charolette (sp) area as our kids are there and this mommy is missing her kids. We probably will do some type of reverse set up though.

We have good friends who lived in Port Charlotte for years (and then they had to return to Massachusetts to care for elderly parents on both sides). They loved it, and miss it terribly. One of our grandsons is in the Air Force stationed near Pensacola, and from what he says, it's absolutely gorgeous weather there. We also have friends who lived in Kentucky - the winters there are a little more than I want to deal with, but it was beautiful country out there. Tennessee and the Carolinas are similar in landscape, just not as cold & snowy during the winter.

Is anyone interested in going in on a chick order with me to Ideal poultry? I have ordered from them a few times before and have been happy with them. (Yes, I should buy local and I would, except that the whole rooster thing is too hard. I want sexed pullets.)
We could just pay for our own chicks and then split the shipping costs by number of chicks ordered.
I need them to be shipped on September 24th so I can stick them in with the chicks that will hopefully be hatching that day.
I'll pick them up at the post office and keep them here(Gilbert) that day until you are available to pick them up.

I'm only ordering 4, probably a BR, a BA and an EE and something else but you can order whatever they have available for Sept. 24th.

Message me if you are interested.

I was in Brunswick, GA for seven years. It is on the coast. The touristy areas are the islands: Sea, St. Simons, Jekyll. I didn't find the locals particularly welcoming. The school system was terrible, being a high school English teacher, I know. The old guard southerners act friendly, but don't really let you in. The lower class white families were suspicious of me because I was a Yankee, I think. An outsider, at any rate. And the black famillies of any class were suspicious because racism issues that are still quite prevelant there. Therefore, it was hard to make good friends. Teaching was very difficult. I was pretty miserable without any family or support system.

Guess who is going to be in Las Vegas in early October? If anyone wants me to pick some up for them let me know. ;)

If anyone is interested this is what I will have available when AZChiknGoddess is out this way.
