Arizona Chickens

They have just a few sponsors. I suggested this but they wanted to keep it small business only. They had a lot of coop submissions but there are a lot out there that are not what you would want to show for proper chicken/animal care and that's why they do Vetting. They purchase sanitary kits for each coop site, wrist bands, maps printed etc. and that's about it as far as expenses. Real attention to sponsorship is not there and many local feed stores and such were never talked to. Not smart. I guarantee Shoppers was not contacted.
The DW and I were there the other night and saw the chicks. They had BR, BL and BO I think. The BL were $1 more, is that typical for that breed?
I've never seen where the BL were more than the others. Strange. I've seen Marans at Aden's be more than those breeds but typically all of those chicks were the same prices.

I think your broody should be having chicks hatch in a few days, how is she doing?

I would wait on the hens and add more chickens!

She's still laying on them. There are only 4 after she's freaked and broken 2. 3 Dark Maran eggs and 1 light colored one. Candles the light one but no action in it. It may be the last egg she laid still in there. I haven't tried candling the dark ones because she's hard to deal with and you said that I prob could t see anything.

I want some chicks. What should I do about her? Try again with new eggs or is she maybe not a good hatcher?

I went through my Barred Rocks from this year, a first time cull. Have about 6 pullets for sale, $10 each, 4-5 months old. These are Standard Bred, not hatchery, so will not be in lay until about 8 months old since they mature slowly. If anybody wants these for layers, pick them up before early next week, otherwise they will be gone. Also a couple of 1-1/2 year old heritage Rhode Island Red hens for sale.
I hope to be going down in the next week or so to pick up some barred rocks, would anybody else like me to pick up a barred rock for them? From the East Valley or Phoenix area and meet me on the East side for one?

My broody, Penguin's, eggs didn't hatch either so I gave her 4 chicks from the feed store. They younger the better, so I called around so I could pick them up the same day they came in. Then I stuck the chicks under her at night and took the dud eggs out. They were a happy family in the morning.
I would hesitate to have her sit on two batches of eggs in a row. It might be hard on her but I'm planning to try again next time Penguin goes broody.

She eats every night and goes back and lays on them. I don't know why she's not having luck here. Should I candle those dark eggs tonight? Maybe find a BRIGHT light and do it? I'd like the Maran chicks to hatch. I don't want to look around for breeds that I want. Really only want a few more chickens.

It seems like the tour is not well planned. I would have thought a bus would be taking people around. I wonder what that would cost and if you could get Purina or Nutrients to sponsor door prizes for the tour attendees and have them vote on their favorite coop and give them a prize too. I bet Lowes would donate something like a new wheelbarrow or $ off chicken wire or something.

maybe we could plan something like that here in Tucson. I know Ace hardware on 22nd would probably donate something as they are big on Tucson Clucks. Great Idea!!
Saw a post on FB from Shoppers they just got chicks in.
I'm still looking for a home for the White Leghorn cockerel & his RIR pullet. Also, have the 2 Polish cockerels & I think I need to find a home for Romeo, the barred NN with his mate, Cruella deVille, the White crested black Polish. Currently the 4 live together in a coop, play together & stay together - the 3 Polish & 1 NN so if possible I'd like someone to take all 4. Romeo is the leader of the flock.

OMG I LOVE your barred NN roo and I would love to have him and I have Polish Crested. I wish you were closer or someone was coming this way. He would have an awesome home here.

@desertmarcy those are beautiful barred rocks!

so I am bummed out. I went to the Dr yesterday and I found out that I still am not released to return to work (going on a year). I have about 5 specialists I need to go and see. I have Cervical spinal stenosis, degenerative joint (2 types) shoulder and my knees and disc disease and joint disease in my neck. She did not sound positive that I will be able to return to work and said I will be having more surgeries in the near future. On the positive side all my labs were good except the fact that I am severely vit D deficient.

Thank God I have an amazing DH and 2 great boys. The livestock pushes me to get up and go do even when I do not feel like getting up. Its a bit disheartening knowing that I probably will not be getting better but maybe they can keep me walking. That is my biggest prayer.

I wanted to remind everyone to be careful we found this huge guy in my coop a few nights ago. thankfully he did not get anyone.

Be Careful.

Had a little backyard coop improvement fun today! We fixed up the waterer, the feeder and the nest boxes are now loaded and in the coop!

nest boxes!

waterer (bought, not made)

feeder (home depot bucket, DH made the holes and hung it)

now my darling spoiled brats need to lay me some eggs, I only have one left in the fridge and the ladies are 24 weeks! Please disregard my dirty coop, we didn't make it to cleaning! I am going to put sand in in the next few weeks as well!
