Arizona Chickens

How cool, do they come to you or do you go to them? Thank you for posting up photos..

I would never pay what Greenfire farms is asking.. I just happen to need chicks, in a hurry.. The only place in town was pratts, no thanks. At the time, durring the summer months.. So rather than go there a friend happen to have chicks from Greenfire.. We have always had barnyard mix chickens, we love them so much.. However, I can't wait to get green, blue eggs from the isbar's..

Cool! I would love to see pictures of your Sidebars and their green eggs.

Yeah, I can't wait.. :weee here is the eggs they came from..
1000

The wheaten Ameraucana are the blue eggs.. So they are almost lie a olive green color.. One of the chicks s black & the other isbar is white with silver splash.. It will be about 5-6 months before they will lay..

It is called research. There are a lot of books out there, even books that will point out differences of US and Britsh standards. You can learn a lot by books. Then there is talking to others, chicken fanciers. Learn who are the true authority on chickens, what breeds they are working with. Points they are working to improve, or working to have a flock that all the birds meet standards. There are meny members of BYC, that joined before the got their first chicken. I did my home work with books. I already know that hatchery chickens were playing Russian Rulet as tp purity of breed. If I purched from a hatchery such as Greenfire Farms, I better be a breeder. I would return any substandard chicken, do to expectations of quality. They do not garentee perfect to standard but close enough they can be used to a achieve a blue ribbin chicken.

Hatcheries such as Ideal and Cackle market to average breader sand fanciers. You can work with them to achieve one that meats standards, but it will be a lot of chicks and time to get the prime stock. Desertmarcy is an excilent local source for a leg up in breeding. There are other members as well.

Going to Chicken Shows is NOT always a good source of chickens to beed standards. In MN State Fair, I meet a couple with their blue book of Standards open, going from breed to breed, they were doing research to put tots gather their first flock.

I have been feeding a duck family every evening, a very insistent family. I will post a recent picture tonight after I take a picture. They have lost 2 of thier charges in the 3 weeks I have been giving them treats. Yesterday a new single duck showed up. It kept picking on the ducklings, not being hers. Well this morning she showed up again, this time she was not alone.

ah I love muscovies!!!!
Yeah, I can't wait..

I'm getting some chicks from that Ace Hardware on Friday when their shipment comes in. SS, Orps, AM I think they said. I'm getting some SS for our Roo.

Last night, I found that one of my broiler chicks has very crooked toes. It is doing fine, but I'm not sure why I never noticed it before. Probably because I was watching their butts more than their feet.

. I do have a question though, is the foot problem passed on to new chicks or is it just a mishap in the brooder/incubator that caused it? This particular chick looks to be a hen. Its comb is still yellow while the roosters are already showing way bigger pinker combs, aggression, and just a generally different demeanor. If I decided in a few weeks to keep this particular chicken, I want to make sure if for some reason it ever got bred it would not pass the foot problem on. (my husband wants to try to keep one rooster with a collar if we get a buff rooster, which looks likely.)

Yuma's chicken laws regarding male chickens. No male poultry shall be kept within the City limits except such male poultry as are incapable of making vocal noises which disturb the peace, comfort or health of any person residing within the City; provided, however, this section shall not be applicable to an animal kept as a 4-H or FFA project. Maybe my son should join one of these clubs ha! I will try the no crow collar too.

I recently separated my meat chicks from the buff orpingtons that I'm keeping. The meat chicken roosters are already getting aggressive. They were teaming up on a buff orpington and injured it so I decided to separate them. The injured chick was a little beaten and bruised, but recovering quickly. I'm not sure if its a rooster as well, but he was giving it right back to them. It just was too much because they are so much bigger. They are only 3 weeks old tomorrow.

On a good note though, I only lost that one chick that didn't thrive. Everyone else is doing great. I think we are past the chick hump now. We got the framing on my chicken coop finished yesterday. Once the hardware cloth is in, I'll finish that part. I need to go to Lowe's and buy hardware for a door plus a couple of pieces of lumber for the door and roost. I'm going to try to make it the door as light as possible. My shed is metal and basically decrepit. I removed two sides of it to make it open air but still leaving two metal sides for shade. I put the back to the west and its going to help them keep cool.

They come to me, the ducks, they huddle by my door waiting for me to come out between 5:-6: in the evening. I wasn't her this evening so I didn't get their picture. The one I posted is a new group. The mom must have been checking things out attracted by all tge happy munching noises. So she brought her brood this morning. I have only a few more days here, I will be living on the 20th. Then head East.

I will not be buying chickens from Greenfire ether. There are locale breeders. If I am going to pay so much for a chicken it better be perfect blue ribbon to standards. If not breeding to impove the breed, but for fun, go for it. I am just saying, don't pay premium prices for barn yard chickens. Hens and pullets over 6 mo $15.00 - $20.00 is reasonable. Anything more had better be a really special chicken. $2.50 - $4.00 for chicks by breed and sex, and up to $10.00/$15.00 for to standard chick if there is a garentee. But I figure on about 2X hatchery prices for really good stock.

ah I have a frizzle roo so I will be making some of these...lol. You need to get one Dave and you will fall in love. such awesome personalities!!! I will give you one or two in spring for you to try. If you don't like them you can give them back but you will fall in love. All of us NN lovers started out thinking they were ugly and odd...lol
