Arizona Chickens

I've got pullets hatched this year and some older 1-/12 to 2-1/2 year old hens I'm selling to thin out before I start hatching again. Barred Plymouth Rock, Blue Copper Marans, possibly some Black Copper Marans, New Hampshire hens, maybe some Rhode Island Reds. I'm still trying to make decisions on which to use for breeding. I've had really good success with the Marans in our heat and it is cooler where you are, so they should all do okay given plenty of shade and water. PM me if interested for more details but they are all organically grown from hatch.

I might be interested in some Marans actually in a month or so. I've always admired the breed but never owned any!
I love my 2 Black Copper Marans that I bought from desert Marcy a couple months ago. One of them lays exceptionally nice large eggs. And they're beautiful healthy birds and they seem to be very smart, lol!!

Also ways nice to have a smart chicken. Taught one of mine when I was a kid to jump hrough a hoop and run an obstinate course. She was just a Cornish X RIR mix.

@City farm I believe the mallow is Indian mallow, Abutilon palmeri. At least it matches all my goggle search photos. It is a native plant to the SW U.S.
Thanks, I think you are right about the species. The seed heads are so different than our native mallows.

Could have used some of those for the rooster I cooked the other day. Toughest bird ever. Usually the meat is falling off the bones of my older birds by the time they've been in the pot for 4-5 hours. At four hours I couldn't even get a fork into this guy. He was in the pot for eight hours before I could pick his bones clean.

Might be worth feeding them a papaya seed supplement before I have to process the next batch of older birds

I got a couple of old birds I need to cull. I wonder if it's better to pressure cook them?

Hello I'm new to the state ( in sierra vista) and had to leave my flock behind when I moved here from Alaska. Looking to start over and figure out what works best here ect

You sure went from one extreme to the other! Welcome to Arizona, sometimes known as hell in the summer.

Where are you finding Sweet PDZ? - inquiring minds!!
I've gotten it at Tempe Feed and Tack but I think The Stock Shop has it too. Get the granules, the dust type gets airborne easily and you don't want to be breathing that in!

x2 very beautiful Sill!
....I like some of the bags I had bought off of desert Marcy back in August I believe from Modesto milling so I would be interested also. I do buy Big Sky currently which has a higher protein rating on the broiler feed at about 20 -22 percent. I just make that mash into fermented feed in extra large yogurt containers about 3 tubs worth.
Interesting about using the higher protein feed. I'll have to try that. I also use extra large yogurt containers to ferment feed in.

It's a good thing I didn't know you were wanting to thin out your flock or I'm sure I would have returned home with some!

Big Sky and Modesto both have 22% for their broiler starter. All their other feed is higher in protein than Big Sky which is what I think is needed. I am also going to be feeding my meat birds 22% from start to finish which is what others are doing with success. I am going to be ordering in the next couple of days so if your interested let me know asap. Once ordered its only about a week turnaround.

My Very 1st Egg! one of the 2 RSL decided to grant me with a little Fairy Egg. I have 3 chicks that are 7 months old now, 2 RSL and 1 EE............ I was giving up hope for an egg.
Small, but it's an EGG! I have 3 more little girl EE in the garage that are 1 month old. I'll let the GD have this one. she claimed on of the baby EE for her self and named her Buttermilk. to go along with Nugget and Kung Poa. I think it was Breakfast that laid this egg. Lunch's comb isn't as red and Dinner is the other EE.
